I have noticed in the last few days a sharpened pitch of hatred on the pages of this forum. It troubles me. Unless capsuleers are to find the better angels of our beings, we will never achieve anything other than our own destruction. We need to seek to bend our own wills to good; not through coercion, slavery, or force of arms, but by the collective force of individual decisions to be and do good. Deny hatred the permission to rule your will.

The last of these rescues presented a recurring question. Why do some pilots jettison legal cross-border passenger cargo such as slavers, hounds and freed slaves? This rescue seemed to be made up of three separate travelling groups, two of slavers with hounds and slaves destined for the illegal trade and one of freed slaves headed for perhaps Gallente or Republic space. Things change very quickly in this hostile place we call New Eden.

I instructed my crew, "Place these passengers in the medical transport unit and the junction of the center roll axis and center pitch and yaw axis." These 5 were quite ill from their experience both before and during their jettison into space. Capsuleer pilots often take little care or notice of passengers not accustomed to space travel. Even in a ship such as our rescue vessel that is a half a KM long and with only a .87 I.M. placing passengers anywhere but at the center of the pitch, roll, yaw axis can generate sickening and harmful G forces. For injured or weak passengers, this is of particular concern. These five made it back to the center OK albeit dazed.

Yesterday and earlier today, we were able to rescue two groups of people. Both were found in close enough proximity to jettison that serious problems were avoided. The last three rescues come after a period of relative inactivity in our patrol areas. We have not been able to determine a pattern to this. If we were able to, we could schedule extra patrols during particularly active times. As it is, we are left with simply trying to adequately cover the times we can cover.

Ah... ignorance is bliss I see.

Now offering freedom to slaves might not be the best solution of it all. They might not be able to handle such 'freedom' properly.

The Nation offers a better treatment for every slave interested. You'll feel no hunger. No thirst. No worries. No suffering. Your minds will be set free. We will provide everything a human being could wish for. No prerrequisites attached. Bring your family along. There is a place for everyone here. In our Promised Land.

Come with us my dear little capsuleers, and feel the heat that is nothing but the eternal storm of darnkess that will rain upon those who dares to oppose us for years to come.

I was wondering where you had gone off to. Hello, Cousins. Keeping well?

By the way, I wouldn't bother dealing with the Stonites. Free-Will cultists, the lot of them, and prone to throwing temper tantrums. Emotionally unstable, but doing mostly good work if you ignore those things and just focus on lives saved (temporarily)

I cannot deny that I sometimes become a bit lost in emotion, a bit of an un-achuran trait for an Achura. Oh well, that is the cross I bear. However, I do not mind bearing it, for it is a hallmark of humanity to experience emotion as part of what motivates and fuels our imagination and experience. As to whether or not I am a free-will cultist, that is up to the judgment of others who also value free-will. I do not accept the judgement of a Sansha loyalist as definitive on the matter, though.

Related to the matters above, I will say that I experienced a great flood of emotion, even elation at the rescue of those list below. To see the surprise of joy on the faces especially of the former slaves but even on the faces of the slavers that they were alive and would live to see tomorrow, generated one of those outbursts of emotion that I am often prone to experience. Guilty as charged.

Sansha have loyalty like there is such a thing as hive mind indecision. They portray every trait of an evolved rogue drone. Only their success in abduction of humans has given them any sense of identity within the public eye. How they have attracted any sympathy from free capsuleers is beyond my comprehension. I concider their political race an abomination.

Hardship is a reality for most of the billions of ordinary people who inhabit our cluster. To most, everyday life is a struggle in one form or another. Life is hardship. The former slaves we rescue know about hardship. They also accept it as a fact of their existence on both sides of slavery. Those coming out of slavery do not expect to be coming out of hardship. They know that the hardships of freedom may and often do exceed the hardships of slavery. Yet, they prefer to be free. One of our recently repatriated Matriculants put it this way, "Freedom dignifies hardship and turns it into a tool that a man can use to build himself." A slave carries hardship on his back because it is put their by others. A free man faces hardship head on. The joy these rescued ones experience is not because they are now entering a life of ease without trouble or suffering. The joy these experience is that of one who sees what is on the other side of hardship and sets one's face as flint to reach it.

94 living souls on board a deathcan are now safe at our temp center.

Ceaseless argument. That is what I am seeing growing once again on this forum. I myself have a history of guilt in this area. Don't get me wrong. Some arguments need to be made and those who are most skilled should make them. But here, the arguments resemble something else. Arguments for and against the existence of God by those whose lives lend little credence to their point of view... Often times those who argue for a god lose on the basis that their conduct presents a rejection of the morals and values espoused in their spoken theology. I'd rather see you live out your theology in a life that makes me want to "know your god" than hear you talk about theology all day while living a bankrupt life.

It isn't just the theologians doing it. Others claim to hold the secret to releasing all the positives of existence if only their way would be adopted. These same ones daily demonstrate that they themselves are prisoners within persistent human traits such as anger, jealousy, greed, insecurity, spite, unforgiveness, etc. No amount of enhancement technologically, psychically, or spiritually has ameliorated these persistent demonstration of human weakness.

So what to do? I certainly don't have many answers, but I think there is a principle that applies to capsuleers and it comes in the form of a maxim of sorts.

THE POWER I AM GRANTED I WILL EXERCISE FOR OTHERS NOT OVER OTHERS.

When I see this, I am far more apt to see your arguments as credible.

Our critical care crew aboard our rescue vessel is always a bit concerned when former Elite slaves are rescued. "Elite" is a euphemism used by slave holders for those slaves particularly suited, sometime bred for hard physical labor. They are often treated as a expendable commodity as it were, fuel for the fire. By the time they are pawned off out of Empire space, they are often merely a physical shadow of their former selves. These are the ones often in need of extensive medical attention. Aged beyond their years with bodies racked ragged by ceaseless heavy labor; that is how we find them.

Most we are able to help back to good health. Many retrain for less strenuous work and live out the remainder of their years in peace. Some choose to join the military of their tribe of origin. They are free to make these determinations on their own.

On a regular supply run, I checked a can at the gate and was able to rescue 29 ex-slaves. I sent a communication to the pilot seeking to understand why he did this. This is the response I recieved. His name is withheld because he seems to now understand the harm he has done.

To: M**** A*****,

As an experienced Khanid Pilot and as a member of the Empire, I know you were taught the proper treatment of your slaves and other people under your care.

How could you just abandon 29 ex-slaves at a Gate to die?

You can not bring enlightment to anyone if they are dead, and as I understand it, the Amarr are trying to enlighten their charges, not kill them.

His Reply:

I beg forgiveness Pilot as you are correct in what you have said. There is an explanation behind this, but it does not justify my actions of leaving those souls to drift in the cold of space.

When I approached the gate, they had already been jettisoned by anothe ship heading out of the region. I thought to take them with me only to realize that I was entering Caldari space where they would be siezed. I left them at the gate in the hopes that an Amarr pilot might pick them up.

After the last rescue and after safely transporting the passengers back at the center, I returned to patrol to see about an opportunity to confiscate a sizeable cargo of dangerous munitions. As luck or providence or whatever you prefer would have it, I was able to confiscate an estimated 81 million ISK worth of ammunition. Never to be used to kill from this time on, this ammunition will be stored and kept guarded forever or until the uranium decays to inert matter.

It has been a busy patrol and rescue day. There seems to be a lot of trade traffic and consequently a lot of passenger jettisons going on. I'm glad we are able to help some of those passengers.

Thank you Gaufres. We appreciate your continued rescue work.

The Disciples of Ston and many of the Matriculants that we have helped are in vigilant watch these days over the helth and well-being of a true servant of New Eden. Our thoughts dwell and focus on the recovery and health of this worthy pilot.

We call him Sam. That isn't his real name, but he will answer to it and it is a whole lot easier for everyone to pronounce than his real name. Sam is my Vherokior crew chief and an incredibly sensitive and perceptive man. Often, he knows ahead of time that something is unusual in a rescue. Often, the whole crew is better prepared and our center fore-warned because Sam has raised the alarm even before the rest of us know what is happening.

Such was the case today. We warped into the patrol area and Sam said, "Captain, that death can contains chaos, utter chaos!" "What do you mean, chief?" I responded. "I'm not sure, but we need to be ready. I feel we need separate compartments and to clear the center section for the injured. I feel this is different than any rescue we have done." My crew got to work immediately and we approached the can even as I contacted the temp center to have the triage crew ready. When we scanned the can and saw what was aboard, our jaws dropped. Sam was right, there was chaos aboard. As soon as all were aboard, we raced back to the center. Best is the least amount of time spent on the ship. Once back at the center, things were a little calmer, but nothing has settled down by any means. We have a lot of sorting out to do on this rescue. Priority is to get everyone fed and medically checked out. Twenty two are in our trauma center and will be transferred to Dresi ASAP. The rest seem OK, except for the woman claiming to be Oura Madusaari. She has had to be sedated for her own protection and safety.

Concord has not been able to help us on confirming her identity due to the fact that they inform us that there are currently 18 refugees in their records all claiming to be Oura Madusaari. This presents a bit of a challenge for us. Who is the real Oura? Our center staff have a lot of work ahead in the next few days.

Yesterday, I complained some about the presence of chaos in the unusual rescue involving the diverse group of passengers. Later a resuce of a single person took place. She told me later that the sound of voices and activity after the dead silence of the can was an unspeakable joy. In the hours since her rescue, she has not been outside of the company of others for any time. It may be some time before she will be able to spend time entirely alone.

We value the lives of those we rescue, even those of the slaver and the former slaver hounds. We see in these lives intrinsic value. There is another kind of value that is an extension beyond the intrinsic. It is the value we attach to those who have, through their actions, personality, kindness, and quality of goodness established a growing edifice of value. This value grows over time and is a product of the appreciation that others have for you.

I had a brief conversation with such a person today while out on patrol. She had recently come out of a great physical challenge; an illness of sorts. She has a long road of recovery ahead of her. Not being terribly skilled with words, I struggled to communicate with her that she is valued by many and that her good deeds of kindness to many have built up a considerable edifice of value.

We all have that potential, but do not all choose to develop it. Even the former slavers rescued today may choose to turn a different direction. There is always potential to see our skills, knowledge, talents, knowhow, etc as tools to serve others rather than ourselves. We see that even as a reality for the hounds we rescue. That is why we seek to retrain them as service dogs.

Our hearts are with the young pilot during her recovery. May peace and well-being abide with you.

I am more than willing to lend my humble gunship to your rescue efforts, Ston. Feel free to contact me with any needs you may have.

I admit to bearing responsibility for some of the negativity you discussed. I still suffer the admittedly baseline tendency to become incensed when I have to read the posts of rabid Caldari nationalists. Frequently, my family and people are called lazy profligates in one post and handed a death sentence in another because the poster has no interest in understanding our culture. (which, I may add, the galaxy benefits from daily, and I don't just mean for latex-packaged eyecandy - need I remind you of the DXi series wetware mainframes that everyone and their mother use daily as jumpdrive computers)

Thank you for your kind offer of assistance, Captain Welle. The most important help would be to keep your eye out for death cans wherever you go, especially in border situations. We are willing to take any rescued people into our program here at DSTON.

The rescue detailed below resulted in 47 people making it out alive. The 22 seriously injured former slaves that we picked up the other day are now stable enough for transport to Dresi. This hopefully will happen in the next few days. We have asked the other passengers if any of them have any information on the one claiming to be Oura. Dead ends are all we have reached so far. She seems to be quite mentally disturbed. We have contacted the staff at our center in Ation to prepare to house and care for her until this is all straightened out. It will take some time to sort out the transportation needs of the 183 tourists. The militants and Marines present a sticky situation as it seems they were involved in some covert plans in the ongoing conflict among the sovereignties. They are patient and no leader has yet emerged and no one has yet requested to contact a consulate. We will continue to provide for their needs until we know more. We are offering employment to all the exotic dancers, male and femaile as well as to the janitors. The wages and benefit s we offer are more than competitive and we also provide a good cause. Those who take employment in our centers generally enjoy what they do and find the work meaningful and satisfying. Finally, the prisoners will be housed at our Yulai detention center. Some if not all would have been executed otherwise since their crimes involved the accusation and conviction of heresy, treason, and murder. They will not be executed under our watch.

Who are these five people that you should decide to just leave them in space to die, Pilot Sharell? Who are they to us? They are persons worthy of saving. So, that is what we do. This we do without killing, shooting or destroying others in the process. That is our mission in a nutshell.

We capsuleers have been given unprecedented ability to put our imaginations into action. Fellow pilots, how do you imagine yourself? Your deeds reveal what dominates your imagination. Some of you have an imagination as dark and smelly as the lowest, filthiest orifice expelling the grossest of refuse that can be conjured. Your actions reveal that. Others have an imagination that moves them to be better than they are. That is called growth. I don't believe you can just stay the same. You will either fall to your dark imaginations and become worse or you will attain to your brighter imagination and become better.

The Disciples of Ston are often criticized for our small deeds of rescue. "You make no difference," so the charge is read. Self-proclaimed "large minded" capsuleers scoff at the small deeds impacting small numbers. 76 people saved. Not a universal impact by any stretch at least at first glance. Surely to the 76 who go on living it is a univere sized act. This is enough for us; but there is more to it than that. The so-called "big-mindedness" of the capsuleer most commonly has to do with pushing the scale of killing, depravity, cruelty and so forth to astronomical limits. This is big-mindedness to some apparently.

What if many smaller deeds were done by many more? What would the cumulative impact be? How does this begin? It begins when capsuleers choose to do what has little impact but what is right anyway. It begins when more and more choose to do the small good deeds before there is any assurance that others will follow. One needs an intentional blindness to the massive scale of evil around us to begin such a journey. One cannot forestall doing good, just because the evil of others makes your good seem small.
