Now this is probably me not being able to see something obvious, and as such will probably seem like a stupid question, but what is the use of a Covetor?

The Procurer has survivability, and the Retriever has cargo capacity, and at first glance the Covetor seems to have efficiency (fastest mining time due to 3 strip miners)

But then I notices that both the Procurer and Retriever had buffs in strip miner efficiency to bring them up the the efficiency of 3 strip miners, while the Covetor has only a small 4% boost, for a 12% total.

does this 12% really make a difference?

it's the T1 equivalent of hulk, so it's supposed to have a fleet mining role.

if you're just solo mining then you're better off with retty or procurer.

forums.  serious business.

12% total? Really? That's 20% with Mining Barge V, not exactly to be neglected.

Strip Miner I yields 540m3 per cycle.
Procurer has a 200% yield bonus for one laser: 540 x 2 =1080m3/cycle.
Retriever has a 50% yield bonus for 2 lasers: 540 x 1.5 x 2= 1620m3/cycle.
Covetor has a 4% yield bonus per level for 3 lasers: 540 x 1.20 x 3 = 1940m3/cycle.

With no other bonus, the covetor remains superior to other mining barges.
Besides, it's role bonus, not bonus per level so flat bonus no matter the level (other than prerequisite to fly the ship), not stacking.
EDIT: except for the covetor wich has a 4%/level, so 20%. Numbers corrected.

The 4% yield the Covetor gives doesn't exactly make it tower above the Retriever.

Assuming no other bonuses included (which there will be)

540 x 1.04 x 3 = 1684m3/cycle.

The extra 44 m3 doesn't seem worth the trip back to the station every other cycle. I cant check for def as i'm at work but I think you can tank a Covetor better than a Retriever so you can use mining drones instead of combat drones to defend you.

That additional bonus will apply to the Retriever as well so its not really an argument (although the extra amount would be greater even if the proportion difference is the same)

For the Retriever and Procurer it's a Role bonus, thus flat out no matter the skill level, while the Covetor's bonus is per level, so 4% per level of the skill Mining Barge, that reaches 20% (4 x 5) per laser at level 5.

Covetor is great for fleets with support.

The covetor and Hulk are designed for mining fleets. They are in no way, shape or form, designed for solo mining. You have to have a hauler and you have to have a rat-shield.

The trade off is getting a higher yield.

My method:

1 - Find a spot to mine (for me it is a nice grav site I scanned down, since i mine in SOV nullsec)
2 - Form fleet between this character and my indy alt.
3 - Fly to mining site to clear rats
4 - Warp in my alt in his hulk
5 - Take ratting ship back to station
6 - Warp my main back in a covetor.
7 - Mine into a can
8 - Upon rat's return, leave in covetor and bring ratting ship back.
9 - Kill rats.
10 - Return to station for hauler
11 - Haul can.

Rinse, Repeat steps 6-11 until I'm done.

FC, what do?
