I'm Amarr, so I'm guessing Armor tanking, but how do you decide?

Generally Amarr armour tank
the way you decided is mostly based on slots/bonuses and what you want to do with the ship. that said however you can pull off some very effective fits by ignoring the bonuses entirely.

What the above poster stated, generally you'll look at the amount of low slots (armour tank) and midslots (shield tank) and decide based on that but there are indeed valid reasonings to choose the other type based on some specific strategy.

Amarr, for the most part, are armour tankers though.

Just remember that an effective tank takes in to account what you actually intend doing with it as well as the ships bonuses.

For pvp you will most likely need to use some of your midslots for the holy three - point, mwd and cap booster.

Pvp ships normally also have a buffer tank rather than a burst tank, PVE ships are usually the other way around.

This is so Logi pilots have more of a chance of targeting you and repping you up. :)

If you dont have many midslots then you will most likely be armour tanking.

Shield setups also have the advantage of using the lowslots to add DPS to the fit, whereas armour tankers normally need to use the lowslots for their tank. Shield tanked ships are also usually faster due to armour tanking tending to slow ships down.

My advice is play around in EFT and try different fittings, Do not take the numbers EFT comes up with as gospel though.

As someone else stated do not be afraid to think outside the box - this can often lead to some interesting fights where people are expecting a certain type of fit and you surprise and hopefully destroy them. :)

Take your fits out and USE them, then tweak them depending on the results.

My missus thinks of EvE as 'the other woman'. :)

^ This is spot on.

Also, bonuses on ships can help with the decision.

Another important thing to take into account is that there are 4 types of damage : EM, Thermal, Kynetic and Explosive.
If you know in advance the kind of damage you will encounter (that's easy in PVE, more difficult in PVP), you can fit a specialized tank setting which will be more effective than a general tank setting.
For example if you know that you will hunt some Serpentis npcs, you will boost your resistances in Thermal and Kinetic because it's the kind of damages they will deal.

You can find here the types of damages dealed by each npcs factions( and also the types of damages to which they are vulnarable, which will help you to choose your weapons/ammos).
