The Station Game; EVE's 3rd sphere of conflict?

I look forward to walking in stations with both my Pod Pilot and DUST Marine. However, as we saw in the past the Incarna feature has to add real value to the game. CCP has acknowledged this and put the project on the backburner. However, what if walking in stations was in fact the “third” game of the EVE universe?

I don’t have a fully fledged suggestion for what the core gameplay would be but several ideas do come to mind immediately. Even if they are not completely fleshed out. Stations and planet surface installations could offer a rich “sim city” or socially themed game in the vain of CCPs (eventual) World of Darkness release. The ultimate goal would be becoming the station or surface installations “patriarch” (or matriarch of course).

The trick would be engineering a complex enough system in which the many aspects of maintaining power (either on the surface or on a station) would require cooperation and competition between the varying players that controlled different aspects of the environment. These aspects could range from station (or surface installation) security, manufacturing, life support, maintenance, entertainment, labor force, etc... Even the relationship between stations in co-orbit and between stations and the surface could be areas for conflict and cooperation.

Of course, what would be the justification for these characters (that would make up the third leg of the EVE stool) to be clones? Simple answer is they are just the elite and wealthy of their respective societies that can afford such technology. However, CCP could take a more complex story driven approach and have these character represent the eventually diffusion of Capsuleer technology to the general populace.

Any thoughts?

oh yeah, maybe “permadeath” by air-locking the offender...Twisted

I would change the topic to "Player-driven station services" or something...

While I think you may have some valid points, the title does need to be changed before mouth-breathers come in here yelling about spaceship barbies without reading your post.

I especially like your idea of being able to control different aspects of station life. I could see this driving conflict between characters. Then again, stuff like shops or drug deals that were originally envisioned for WiS would have a similar effect, without having to come up with a new sov-like control measurement.

I think extending one's "control" to the planet surface will to some extent be implemented with DUST. I'm not sure that doing something akin to sim-city would be widely supported though, I know I for one don't want to have to babysit a population of NPCs.

Agreed on the sim city NPC baby-sitting. PI is bad enough. Thanks for the feedback.

just wrote this to another thread so copy pasting all the way:

Only fact in the entire wall was that they have to restart the wis development in some point. People want out from their cq's and use their barbie dolls to something meaningful and interact with others. In other words content to the wis environment. Preferably something related to industry and marketing, in game politics, in game chilling with friends, gambling, missioning & exploration, pvp related activities which can be both psychological or actual confrontations, corp/alliance wide competitions and showoffs, stealing and smuggling. I can continue the list but you get the point.

Of course this can be expanded as deep into the station structure as wanted, giving the players and specially station owners great deal to control which activities can and will be ran in their stations and how much work they are willing to put to support them.

There is room in this game to expand. If we have 2-3x more ppl logging in there will be more ppl outside flying the ships and doing pvp even if stations have some meaningful and interesting content to play in. Resources to stations have to come from somewhere and they don't just appear from thin air like in wow fantasy.
