There's a tool called TriExporter that should be able to extract the models from the game files for use in software such as Maya or Blender.

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

There's a fair bit of info in the linked thread regarding the textures and all the other gfx malarky and how to apply them to 3d models in external software, it's well worth reading the whole thread.

This is all correct, however a word of caution:

Some of the specialized textures are not available for all the ships. Only .dds texture files are exportable from the game. The T2 versions of the ships have no .dds files assigned to them. They use the T1 versions of the textures which are modified by special scripts which cannot be exported. If you want to export the T2 models, you can, however if you wish to preserve the texture maps as they appear in the game, you'll have to figure it out for yourself in whatever 3D program you decide to use.

It can be irritating, but with some work, it looks good. =D

Have fun!
