listened to the summerfest stream and somebody suggested that every time a ship is changed the old version should still stay in the game. (analog to a real life oldtimer)

IMO this was a quite cool idea. E.g remove it as item from the market and make it only tradeable via contracts.. change the description a bit etc.

If thats not feasible for some reason the least what could be done is to add to the description of the updated ships that this is a improved version of the old design.. (edit: like a little changelog)

how to fix eve: 1) remove ECM 2) rename dampeners to ECM 3) add new anti-drone ewar for caldari 4) give offgrid boosters ongrid combat value

When the DEVs re-tool, modify, or re-skin a ship they are not creating an entirely new thing in their database... they are simply altering values.

The only way to preserve the "old versions" is to create an entirely "new entry" into the database using those "old values."

This causes a whole slew of issues because which ships and/or BPOs/BPCs will drawing from which "version?" Will players get a choice in which version they want? Can CCP even give players a choice when there are hundreds of thousands, possibly even millions of that specific ship in circulation? Even if CCP found a way to do all this, how much effort and resources are they willing to spend maintaining this "old stuff" when they are constantly trying to fix or create new stuff?

Simply not worth the effort.

- copying an entity in a dp is not a problem
- blueprints build the new ships obviously
- i didn't talk about ship models at all
- no need to maintain old stuff
