Carriers used to excel in certain plexes (drone hordes if I recall correctly) because they could quckly spawn the entire room and only had to kill the BS's to complete it. This was changed....

There has was also several anoms that allowed supers to complete very quickly.... but this was changed...

I'm not aware of any upcoming changes to prevent or hinder carriers from running anoms. As carriers don't see a lot of use (especially in PvE), and (@ Kara), we don't want to discourage their use...

Very true just wanted to be honest with new players who actually look for information (love killing idiots carrier ratters).

As for whether you should buy the character Eolos my oppinion is that your knowledge and experience grows about the same as your character. Just because you can and can afford to fly something doesn't mean you should.

But it's your game play it the way you want to and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

In my "humble" opinion... no. In buying a character you basically skip over the process of learning which skills are useful for what and basic survival skills... which are all better gained early on when you have a cheap clone and access only to cheap ships.

Ooh, buying a character. Even better, flying a ship you don't know how to fly. Makes it so much easier.

Why rat in a carrier that cost a 1 bil while a 200mil ship can do exactly the same.

1.) Ratting in a carrier is riskier than ratting in a BS, and many BS's can run anoms just as proficiently.

2.) The current use of carriers in EvE is not as common as I'd like. How much benefit you gain from having a carrier pilot is heavily dependent on WHOM you're flying with: smaller entities use them mainly for logistics (not-so-risky), serious WH corps use them to escalate sites (potentially risky), larger corps/alliances/coalitions use them in cap fleets (very risky), Pirates use them to play station games (not-so-risky-at-the-moment), and some aggressive corps use them to support BS gangs (very risky). Ratting carriers (moderately risky) are commonly used in larger coalitions with lots of protected ratting space, but are always considered juicy and fun targets (I've killed my share of ratting carriers). I wouldn't recommend buying a carrier character unless you will actually use the carrier reasonable often, and I wouldn't rat with one unless I had my own piece of nullsec I could barricade up and play in, with consistent friendly support nearby!

3.) Moving a carrier around can be a pain in the ass, between maintaining a supply of isotopes to having trust-able people to light a cyno for it, you really shouldn't bother with them until you're in a very comfortable position with good corp support. Otherwise, they are at best expensive hangar ornaments and at worse expensive targets.

Uhhh. None of this is true depending on the space you are in. There are regions where carriers are still pretty regularly used to rat anoms. Also ratting in a carrier is fairly safe provided you aren't an idiot.

Plenty of folks die ratting in anomolies in carriers. Of course, it really depends on what space you are ratting in. Some parts of nullsec are so empty a person can rat fairly safely in a carrier. But unless you are going to be living in space far removed from the rest of eve you will probably have neutrals or reds who roam your space occasionally. Sooner or later one of them will come looking for a carrier they see in space on directional scan with fighters deployed. Finding an anomoly isnt difficult and its only a matter of time before they zero in on the one you are running and come to tackle.

Carrier ratting tends to draw a lot of interest from roaming gangs. Once a neutral sees that someone has been carrier ratting in a system he and his friends will likely want to spend some time around that space.

Personally being able to fly a carrier and actually knowing what you are doing in one are really quite different, I would suggest you skill up normally and learn the basics before you jump into a carrier.

Or if you do let me know what system you're in so I can ...cough cough help you..
