Instead of having the person need to scan each asteroid individually, you could make it a passive module. With it on your ship, asteroids get something akin to a HP bar.

What - did they nerf the scanners?
Last time I used one they scanned all roids in range of it - and you knew which one was which by selecting them from the scan result (it's linked to the overview).
