Hey guys!

I really wanted to try this game and give it a serious try, but the game is very difficult to learn to say the least. First of all its not like other MMOs, which is a good thing ;) but you get very little help and the tutorial is prolly the worst I have ever seen. Do this, do that, I have no clue where to look or what to click. It likely makes a lot of sense of you know the game already. I accidentally hit my map and couldnt figure how to close it again, I know.. how hard can that be.. Very hard it seems. All the basic stuff is not like other MMOs, I dont need to know how to get great loot or make fast cash, I would just like to know how to move my ship, use jumpgates, mine and how to use weapons on the ship. I have heard that Eve should have a steep learning curve and I must say they were right ;) it will likely keep some ppl from playing the game, I have not giving up yet, but a better tutorial guide would be nice... In most other games you can just login and start killing, questing, or whatever you want to do, but not in Eve, not if you are a newbie.

You need to prepare a lot before you start this game. I have found a lot of information about the game, like the different races, ships, faction war, how to make isk fast, etc. but could really use a guide on how to do the most basic stuff.

Thanks,
Hazerith :)

Welcome. All good things come hard.
The current tutorials are a massive improvement over the old days, but it is a never ending job to make them better.
Just take it slow if it feels difficult, I'm still picking up new stuff after all these years P

Dont try to rush the tutorial, take it slow, theres no reason to try to finish it as fast as possible, EVE takes time.

The tutorial should tell/show you where you need to click for the different things, it will also tell you how to undock and move around.

As others have said, welcome to Eve. The basic tutorial should cover most of that movement stuff I believe (it's been years since I did it though, and it has changed since I did it).

For a basic rundown though, most of the time there are three things you need to know to cover 90% of your travel needs. First off, you can select or right-click an object and Approach it to fly towards it. Second, you can select/right click and Warp To things more than 150km away (mostly used for getting from one side of the solar system to another). Third, you can select/right click a gate and click Jump to jump through to the other solar system that it connects to.

It's also possible to steer your ship manually, by double-clicking in space to make your ship turn and go in the direction you double-clicked, but it is a far less useful method than approach (since your goal is usually to get somewhere, not out into the middle of space).

Sidebar: Many people tend to ask for joystick control of their ships at this point. Don't bother because it won't happen. The Eve server only handles data in 1 second intervals, which is too slow for practical joystick use. It does this to make it possible to handle 40k+ people online at any given time in 7500 solar systems all on one server. Once you get used to flying ships in Eve you'll realize that the current piloting method is far superior and that joystick flight would be more trouble than it's worth anyways (there's also the fact that even the smallest ships in Eve are the size of RL 747s. The biggest ones are the size of a decent sized island (15km)).

And, yes, there is a learning cliff in Eve (not a curve), but if you like the idea of a rough and harsh game world where anything goes and what you do can shape the universe, then there's a good chance Eve is the game for you. I agree that the tutorial is not all that it could be, and it takes a lot of knowledge to do the most basic things, but it can pay off big in the long run. Stick with it and don't get discouraged, every one of us ran into the learning cliff too (for many of us it was even steeper than it is now).

Feel free to ask questions in this forum if there are things you don't understand (though I would suggest going through the whole tutorial first, lest you ask questions that it already covers). Most of the posters here are willing and eager to answer newbie questions and help people get started in Eve.

Thank you for the welcome and replies :)

I will see if I can give it another go tonight. The game is very interesting with a lot of player control. The scape combat I have seen on youtube looks amazing. In about 3-4 years time I will be part of that myself ;)

First of all, welcome to EVE. It's not trivial to get started but if you ask the right questions I'm sure you will succeed.

Then just a small thing: you don't need to wait for years before getting into combat. If you read some PvP guides and don't mind losing ships you should be able to start killing and geting killed after just a few days. Feel free to convo me (or ask on the forums) once you think you would like to try it out (I was going to post a wall of text but I think this might not be the time for it Smile).

So anyway, good luck and cu in space!

Hmz, too lazy to repeat all the previous post.

So read them. They are all spot on.

And yes, tutorials are still not perfect. Luckily CCP is monitoring these forums about it to improve them.

Thank you! It seems that the W,A,S,Z method would work but obviously only does in the station. There is a mission that has a cargo pod inside an asteroid and was almost impossible to get to. I wish I had known about the double-click in space method. Don't recall seeing that in the tutorials.

They ae supposed to be updating the tutorial interface to make it much less confusing as to what the tutorial wants you to do next. There was a creenshot in a recent devblog that had the tutoral popups anchored to the objects in space they referenced making it rather easy to see where on you screen the next step of the tutorial missions needed you to focus on.

Hey i only started recently so thought i'd post my 2 cents.

First off definetly finish the tutorial (I have yet to finish scan tutorial)

But the others all teach you alot about the game and hand you some pretty decent rewards.

Second, decide what you wanna do as early as you can. No point messing around learning skill you never gonna use,

Third, find yourself a good corp. A good post in recruitment forums will attract good corps regardless of your level of skill with eve.

Good luck, welcome to Eve.

Buddy,

I will be in game tonight around 1500 Pacific time.

I will happily help you get up to speed, and want NOTHING in return.

Being a new player is tough, and I hate to see someone floundering.

You're right, Eve is unlike ANYTHING else, which makes it the most awesome game on planet Earth, imho.

If you need some help, hit me in game tonight.

Read this PDF: http://www.isktheguide.com/

It is probably the best single source of info about EVE. There are other better specialized references around though.
