Here's an off-beat idea. Inspired by another thread.

Why do we automatically know who other players are. You see a ship in space, you immediately know their employment history, their age (and hence likely ability) and you can correlate so much information by watching them a while.

What if.... right click show pilot info was removed? Their name/corp/Alliance didn't appear in the overview.... Unless;

* You're in high sec because concord broadcast the details of every ship signature to all and sundry.
* You're in low sec and commit a criminal offense, and the authorities take an interest and decide to let others know.
* You're in the same corp as them
* You're in the same fleet as them
* They talk in local
* you scan their ship
* They advertise themselves to you specifically
* You are in a private convo with them

In geographical chats you appear as "unkown pilot" until you speak, in other chats your name appears as normal. You would not know who killed you unless you knew who they were before you died. If they are in an alliance marked blue, they are still blue... but thats all you know.

Why? Because it would disrupt the morass of blues in the comfy null bear land. With anonymity, people can kill. It will take time to work out who your murderer is....

I think some level of anonymity is good.... but where should it start, and when should it end?

I personally think you should have full info available for everyone on your overview, and probably for anyone within a certain scan range.... I'd much prefer something along the lines of:

A ship in space registers as a distance ship in space, identity & ship type unknown.
Within 10-20 au, the ship type becomes known
within 5-10 au, the ship pilot & affiliations become known...

I'd give bonuses to the ranges based on ship types (maybe based on sensor strength).....
I'd give bonuses to the ranges based on ship roles (covert ops for example)
I'd give bonuses & penalties to the ranges based on fitted modules (backup arrays might increase ranges, cloaks might hurt ranges)

Only if they also add 15 minute "background checks" at every empire stargate.

the directional scanner is really cool becuase it already does this.

As for the whole "why do we automatically know who they are?" you realize that with today's technology i can take a picture of you with the google goggles app and find your facebook page in under a minute? CCP needs to start making this game a little more sci fi and a little less ****** ass parade

It's because the idea isn't terrible. But I don't think many people will like it.
