New Cargo Reconfiguration Rig for New Mining Barges

The revised Hulk and Covetors have only a tiny cargo bay to hold mining crystals. Miners in Empire Space will probably not face any difficulty with this limitation, but specialist miners in 0.0 and WH space may find it unduly burdensome. The proposed rig would give players a choice that helps alleviate the difficulty, but also has some costs.

I don't have the exact numbers worked out, but the idea would be to sacrifice a large amount of room in the ore bay in exchange for a lesser increase in the cargo bay. Just as a starting point, perhaps it could triple the cargo capacity, taking it from 350 to 1,050 cubic meters (an increase of 700), at the expense of losing twice or even three times as much in the ore bay. As with all rigs, the penalty could be reduced (by only a bit) by training up the appropriate rigging skill.

As I say, the numbers would need to be adjusted a bit here. But at least this would give players an option of carrying a wider array of mining crystals.

No, they're meant to be used with fleets. Furthermore, there's only enough room in the Ore hold of the Hulk/Covetor for one (1) cycle.

Have spares:
1. in rorqual/orca
2. in secure cans
3. jettisoned by the hauler
4. pretty much anything else that doesn't lessen the need for having someone (or an alt, I guess) help you.

One of the bitter points of a good bittervet is the realisation that all those SP don't really do much, and that the newbie is having much more fun with what little he has. - Tippia

You say that they are "meant to be used in fleets", but they can be used just fine, without limitations in crystal selection, in all of Empire space. Which is, as we all know, where about 90% of mining happens.

If you really wanted to force those people use their Hulks in a fleet, you would have to limit them to carrying only 1 or 2 crystals, with a 75 m3 cargo bay.

He's trying to use that to argue my point that the "intent" of the hulk is a fleet boat.

Procurer/Skiff --> brick tank, though gives up some carrying capacity and yield for the tank. Best used in dangerous situations (e.g. ninjamining), where you're not necessarily with some form of support fleet (industrials, orca, whatever)

Retriever/Mackinaw --> Huge capacity ore bay, gives up a little tank and mining yield for this though. Best used in "moderately safe" situations (e.g. hisec or "controlled" lowsec), when a support fleet isn't around to help with hauling.

Covetor/Hulk --> built solely for raw mining yield. Gives up tank and storage capacity to achieve this. Best used with a support fleet (Industrials, Orca, etc) to handle moving the ore.
