I've been playing in my laptop for months, without a SINGLE disconnect, through my wifi router.

Yesterday, I started experiencing Closed socket errors and double pop-up closed socket errors.

I checked that:

-Broadband was working properly. I could fire up a browser, and Team Speak would not close at all. It was just EvE failing and falling.
-I got disconnected several times in 1 hour and a half, with two closed socket errors in 15 minutes.
-I am completely SURE that there was nothing running on the computer but EvE and Team Speak. No browser, no other programs but Avast and such.
-I do not have Steam installed.
-I was actively playing: moving, warping, activating modules, etc.
-I only had ONE client open.

I am a bit pissed off because I lost my connection when I was hugging a 0.0 gate in my Hurricane, and while I frantically tried to relog in, a Talos landed on top of me and I enjoyed quite a few awesome seconds of my fleet pals narrating how my Hurri was being manhandled by the Talos at point blank.

I did not lose the ship, but it was VERY, VERY close. I cannot risk it in these conditions.

The only things I can think they're causing this would be:

-The last TS3 update from yesterday.
-A problem within EvE itself.
-Avast antivirus or something?

I have absolutely zero computer expertise, so in order to provide info after a closed socket, please let me know to create a tracert report.

I think that you can rule out 1 and 3. A lot of people seems to have had this problem for months now and considering that I doubt it is any specific software that causes it.

I had this tonight again after having been able to play for two days with no problems. Now it's back and I could literally not play. After the first disconnect I couldn't dock because it closed again just as the warping back was finished.

It happened to me again, but only once. Fortunately not in the middle of an engage or I would be toast.

The only thing I can do for now is to have another client open and with passwords on, to try and relog in as soon as possible.

Yeah, something changed recently and it sucks.

I have not had this issue other than maybe twice in the past 6 months other than times I actualy lost internet.

Now, today I have had it more than a dozen times over many clients and several sessions. I was mining, running 3 clients/accounts, actively interacting with each client every 1-2 minutes and randomly would get a freeze, then the double socket closed window. Sometimes one cliet would drop, often 2 and not the same ones.

This is annoying as hell and with the new crash uploader thing you should be able to catch what is going on and fix it. Did things change with your hardware upgrades that recently got deployed and you don't want to admit that new software running them is messing things up? Seriously, this is bad and apparently, pretty wide spread, fix it.

No other internet issues with Mumble, TS3, Vent, Yahoo Messenger, Opera browser, anything.

It's Eve and something is different.

This does seem to be worse now.

On my main I started to have the socket issue appear as soon as the Escalation to Inferno patch was released.
It basicaly made the Eve client fall foul of my ISP's FUP filter so I'd get DC'd constantly between 3pm >11pm Eve time.

The mid-July network upgrade seems to have introduced a cycle of lag to the procedings, making gameplay about
as stable as my trust in Banks being honest.

I'm on a T-Mobile 3g PAYG setup, using a USB dongle. I kind of gave up hope after petitioning this as nothing I tried or
did resolved the issue. I hoped CCP would eventualy make the network code more robust & the problem would dissapear.
Which did kind of happen as I've seen the connection drop on the dongle & the active Eve session stay active through to
the Dongle re-connecting.

I'll have to do some more testing.

ok I did find something! I don't know if it's the real source of the problem yet but I have the impression it's a good step forward, at least for me. As it usually happens I found it out while trying to fix something else

Making a long story short: it could be something related to the deactivation and reactivation of devices as managed by windows. Actually the problem should be the reactivation, or exiting from sleep mode if that's the correct way to say it in english. It's something related to a reactivation-timer which I don't exactly know what is all about but who cares

Anyway, you can test it yourself following these steps: Start Menu ---> right click on Computer ---> Management. Then go on the Device Management and expand the Network Interfaces list. Right click on the interface you use to connect to your modem/router and select Properties ---> Advanced. You should have a list of features on the left and their related behaviour on the right. Go to Wake Up Capabilities and select None (it should be set on "both" as default).

Like this: http://i.imgur.com/0JHDM.jpg

If you're logged in EVE you should have a socked closed error immediately. Now, a lil step backwards. Since you aren't allowing your network interface to wake up anymore, it would be better if you disable the possibility for it to be deactivated. This can be done in the Energy Management window.
Just go in your Control Panel ---> System and Security ---> Energy Management. Whichever preset you're using (I suggest "High Performances") you have to modify the settings clicking in the "modify settings" link. First of all set the general setting for the "Computer Suspension" into "Never" then go further clicking the "modify advanced settings" which should open you a menu of features in a separate window. Scroll down till you find "Suspension", once there toggle "get in suspension after" to "Never" and than the next one "Allow Reactivation Timer" to "Disabled".

That's it.

Now sorry if some of the steps are not worded correctly but I just tried to translate them form *my*frikkin*language* into english so..... be smart and most of all send me isk if it fixed your troubles. Probably it won't, but meh..... it was worth some spamming Pirate

will throw my hat in the ring here, since Inferno i have had 8 disconnects for a closed socket, prior to inferno i never even knew this window existed. And now i get disconnected and oddly get 2 popups at the same time for the error every time lol

The window for the disconnect is new with Inferno - before Inferno your client restarted automatically after being disconnected (without giving a reason on what happened). Getting 2 popups at the same time might be a (minor) bug - please make a screenshot the next time this happens and attach it to a bugreport (please add my name in the subject of the bugreport).

I have gotten the same thing on two desktops running three accounts over the same modem. first one system and then both. always with two windows popping up closed socket error. unplug and reboot both the modem and the router did nothing. I don't know how to do a vpn vertial private network. I did do a hard reset on the modem and this solved the problem. and has not come back. somewhere in one of the updates another socket that is used to control the affending socket was manipulated and caused the closure. doing a hard reset on the modem is to use the reset button / pin hole on the modem and setting it to factory standards. This should solve the issue for most. Steam also needs to be closed when you set the modem to factory default.

hope this helps.

So I had a good week last week with only one crash. Then I log on Saturday and Sunday and can get no more than 10 minutes of game play before a closed socket error. Had seven socket errors before I finally gave up for the day on Saturday and have had 4 today.

I'm now reduced to logging in only to update skills and adjust buy orders.

And because we've had no more communication with anyone from CCP, it doesn't look like this is going to be addressed anytime soon.

I had these socket losses too a few days ago after reinstalling windows...

But after deactivating the windows 7 firewall and installing a third party firewall everyting was working fine again. You should try this, maybe this helps!

I had no closed Socket errors after deactivating the windows firewall so far!

Just tried it. Got an hours worth of play then closed socket.

Never happened to me before Inferno and nothing has changed on my end, so I'm with the "it's CCP's fault" group.

I started getting this problem a few days ago. It's only happened 2 or 3 times, but it's definitely not due to my ISP dropping, nor my machine energy Management settings - last time it happened I was in the middle of a LvL 4 mission, so my machine was not inactive or without inputs.

luckily I was able to complete the mission when I logged in again immediately and my maelstrom was none the worse for it...this time.

not something I'd like to see happen regularly though.

I'm in the UK, noticed that a lot of the other posts have been from abroad.

For a day I was spared the problems but the last two days it has come back and is now worse than ever with a disconnect every 2 minutes. I have now cancelled until CCP can look into this.

Just adding to the chorus of double Socket Closeds, East Coast USA, ISP Time Warner.

Maddeningly inconsistent, sometimes happen twice in five minutes, sometimes fine for hours. Makes it pretty much impossible to pew-pew in confidence. Messing with routers/firewalls hasn't resolved the issue.

Getting the same problem here. Hours of game play fine with 2 accounts. Then with out warning, socket error, 2 pop ups like all the above posters. Only started happening 2 or 3 weeks ago ( I can't be sure as to the exact time it started). Have been playing for almost a year, never had this issue before.

Nothing new has been installed in my computer in months, either software or hardware. Have not changed any Windows setting either.

Have not changed ISP, and we are not having any general internet connection issues.

The game has been unplayable for me, I'd get the double socket closed error then log back in, but it would happen again before my ship had finished warping back to its previous location, usually it would happen 3 or 4 times in a row. The longest I could play without it happening was an hour maybe 2 at most, about 14 hours ago I closed utorrent and it hasn't happened since. Clearly this isn't the cause of the issue for most people, and it shouldn't be an issue with me either as uTorrent isn't even making a dent in my bandwidth, but I suspect it's something to do with how my ISP traffic shapes or deals with P2P traffic, its possible some of the packets from Eve get mistaken as being P2P traffic?
