I just got started doing PI about a week ago, after training up my Command Center skill to level 4. Found a lot of changes apparently happened this summer with Incarna 1.1 coming out and that most of the web pages were now dated. So I created a more current one.

This guide presumes you know the basics of Eve and focuses just on PI. I tried to keep it relevant rather than complete, and provide working examples and sample layouts.

I'd appreciate comments at that URL, beyond "likes" here.

Thanks and I hope you find it useful.

I don't have time to read the whole thing but I skimmed through and one thing that struck me was your picture of oxygen production on a gas giant. I would never ever create links that long on a gas giant (though oxygen production is pretty easy because it is so abundant so it is probably viable). Any gas giant links should be as small as possible, i.e. you pretty much shouldn't be able to see the links because the buildings are so close to each other.

Also your examples of "stretch" I have to admit I have done stuff like that when i was starting out. Just looking at the picture you can tell that all the power resources on the planet are going to the buildings and links and very little to actual extraction. Sometimes you are better off just admitting that two resources on one planet is more trouble than it is worth and you would be better off just focusing on one.

Have read through it once, looks nice. Learnt some new tricks from it.
And yeah, doing PI in hisec is mostly a pain with very little return. Hisec needs several extractors per factory in my experience, but I might've hit the wrong planet. =/

Thanks for the quick feedback. Alas the post wasn't clear... the text was for the diagram below, not the one above. I've added some dashes between photos and text to try and make that clear. In reality, my Oxygen production on the gas giant is the tightest layout I have.

Thanks,

Kevin

Just guessing based on my early exploration, but I think your right!

No I was looking at the right picture. That isn't tight enough. On a gas planet you basically want the buildings so tight that when viewed from above the links are not really visible.

Again for Oxygen it isn't as important because it is so abundant you will have more than you know what to do with. But for say making Oxidizing Compounds out of Reactive Gas (which is probably the worst PI product as far as availability) you are going to want every little bit of power possible so you can focus on extraction rather than links.

Really for all of my planets all my processors are glued to each other with the shortest links possible. It is pointless to waste energy on needlessly long links.

The only links that will be long are when your hot spot moves to the far side of the planet and you don't want to break down the entire operation.

If you pick the right planets and the right products, not hard to make 600-800k per planet per day (maybe a bit more even). It doesn't sound like much, but 5 x 30 x 800k = 120M/mo, which is a nice chunk of change for a new player in exchange for 5-10 minutes per day while flying from A to B.
