Greetings,

The ExTech corporation has grown since its creation the last month, and has been focusing since then on the research and developement of cutting edge technologies or innovative solutions.

In the continuity of this, we are proud to announce the opening of the New Eden Infosphere, consisting of a wide, large scale network operating via servers based in Yulai, for neutrality purposes. The Infosphere network is basically a colossal library trying to collect every kind of knowledge or every bit of text, images, holos, games, or whatever that can be found in the cluster under a digital form. Its database is already respectable and growing everyday, but any contributions that we do not already have is much welcome.

The Infosphere is also a place where cultural or scientific exchanges, discussions, debates or joint efforts are encouraged - though bigotery and counterproductive behaviors are stricly prohibited. Everyone, no matter his or her origins can connect and access it with a simple Galnet interface (or pod connection in the case of capsuleers). The Infosphere also features a 100% virtual reality, allowing people to more intuitively navigate through it and interact with each other. Special algorithms and independant adaptable and semi intelligent routines also allow to operate proper research or calculations put at the disposal of every user. And like in any VR, everyone can import or create his or her own pieces of virtual environnement for a more comfortable work (within certain limits). You can also, of course, isolate yourself if you need a quieter environnement, like in any library.

The channel access for capsuleers is made by entering the channel ID "New Eden Infosphere".

Thank you for your attention, with the hope this virtual place can be of any help. If you have any questions, feel free to ask them.

Lyn Farel,
ExTech, CEO.

First, let me say that I applaud this effort very much. The cluster sorely needs a curated, apolitical information portal offering universal access to the wealth of our species's knowledge. You have my respect and admiration for attempting to create one.

You may or (more likely) may not know that I was once involved in a similar, albeit less public, venture. The Pneumatic Athenaum, before it went defunct, amassed quite an impressive collection of anthropological information--specifically regarding unique cultural and spiritual expressions of isolated, local communities throughout the cluster. The goal of the enterprise was nothing less than to collect, archive, analyze, and cross-reference the entirety of recent and current human ethical thought. The personalities involved either lost interest, moved on, or died before it was completed, but the extensive data sets produced are all still preserved in a dark archive, waiting for purpose.

I would be happy to give this data over to you, but I would have to stipulate one of two conditions. My own sense of ethics regarding universal access begs that I ask you to consider the following:

Either

1. Remove all access protection measures that censor information based on age. Developmental levels vary, and age is an arbitrary marker. It should be up to the users to determine their own level of comfort with any given set of information, and the right to determine appropriate content the sole responsibility of their guardians. If parents, churches, or communities wish to restrict their youth's access, it is their responsibility to enforce it client-side.

or

2. Cease integrating the censorship protocols of any empire, nation, or polity into your own access algorithms. You are under no obligation to do so operating out of Yulai. One cannot exercise political censorship when distributing information and still claim to promote universal access. Again, any filtration should fall client-side, not server-side. If any of the four major polities are offering you grants to restrict access for them, I will see those streams of revenue replaced.

I realize that you and I probably have differing philosophies regarding the ethics of information access, and I am not asking you to completely conform to mine. If you can meet me half-way, though, and implement either one of these conditions into your access policy, the Pneumatic Athenaeum is yours.

Mr Renoir,

Firstly I have to thank you for your generous offer and I am pretty sure that your information will enrich even more the project.

Then, your concerns have been noted. The children protection is indeed unecessary and does not make a lot of sense. Please understand that we still employ mostly scientists and scholars and a lot of details like this one are still to be discussed. This measure will be removed as soon as possible.

Concerning the acceptation of censoring protocols of any Empire directly in the Infosphere, I think there must be a misunderstanding. The only legal protections were about children access, nothing more (but again, these limitations are now going to be removed and let to the care of the people responsible to the children in question). To put the emphasis on this, I must also insist on the fact that no external political pressure or censorship will be tolerated on this project. Which clearly means that there will never be any censorship protocols introduced in the access protocols of the Infosphere. Knowledge has to be free of access and more important, free of any obscurantism.

I must also add that any Empire willing to censorship specific pieces of informations present in the Infosphere are in their right to do so, but will never be able to achieve that unless they want to block all access to the Infosphere on their territory. In fact, as it is present in Yulai, they virtually have no access to the servers in question to modify or block anything.

I hope this answers to your questions.

Consider my concerns addressed. The size and complexity of this repository makes it unsafe to transport electronically without possible loss. I will shortly be en route to Yulai in a specially outfitted battleship that has been reconfigured into a giant, mobile supercomputer cluster to house the Athenaum. Once it is in your possession, feel free to integrate it into your storage. It is quite an impressive machine, if I may say so.

Thank you again. We will be waiting for you then, and if you need any help on the matter, please do not hesitate to tell us.

Also, I definitly feel ungrate to just accept this like that. What could we do for you in return ?

This has promise, and I will do what I can to support it. Anything which furthers understanding of creation.

You've already done it:

I'll take a look the next time I plug into pod, however, I do have a question regarding your corporation, Extropian Technologies. Given harsh Imperial regulation of the economy, as well as the general vibe of Amarr not putting much stock into research & development (in the sense the Gallenteans do it to improve lives, and the Caldari do it to achieve economic dominance), what is the nature of ExTech, and how does it operate? I am aware that existing within the SCC guarantees such freedoms, but local law must be taken into account if one tries to leverage influence in the baseliner world.

I am aware that you are merely Ammatar by ethnicity, and you have renounced your Holdership quite recently. I also note that ExTech's headquarters can be found in Stetille in Sinq. So, I apologize for any misunderstandings if any have been made.

There is nothing to say that Extropian Technologies is in any way affiliated with the Empire. If anything, the decision to put the servers in politically-neutral Yulai suggests the opposite.

At any rate, Lyn I do applaud your efforts! You've always been the very objective, scholarly sort so I know you'll do well with this. Best of luck!

Indeed, this corporation is not affiliated to any of the empires, in any way. The headquarters location - which is probably a temporary one - is mostly due to practical reasons at the moment.

On another level, the Amarr invest heavily in research in developement too, at the contrary, but to my knowledge this is mainly focused on specific things like armament of course, but also on implants technology.

Ms. Farel,

I encourage your initiative, especially as a platform for knowledge sharing. I think we have so many libraries, that helping people find and understand the right information becomes more important than merely 'making it available'

Some people mistakenly believe the Amarr do not invest heavily in knowledge and the development of knowledge, while in fact they do. I'm prepared to give a number of lectures on the practical application of Amarr knowledge that has been compiled throughout the ages.

Having explored it, I encourage all to join. Less conversations about what ship you like, and more about the wider world. The one we inhabit and affect each day.
