Hi all,

I am wondering if there are any EVE roleplaying and lore introduction tutorials/guides ? I know I can probably extract this information from various articles, forums posts, wiki entries and so on but I would like to read a more concise summary of these, if there is any.

While I will probably have more in depth reading of the material available in the future, I would like to have a jump start with background information in order to have some story for my character - why is he here, his goals, personal history, etc. For that I want to have a better knowledge of the game's universe, history, races and factions and the relations between and how the in-game activities and terms are related to the lore.

I am not looking for general RP tutorials, I am quite familiar with RP concepts from many other games. I just want the EVE specific information and how roleplaying concept are applied in this game.

Thanks

The old Storyline intro should be a good start.

Mark's lore guide is a good start. You can find it here.

If you want to poke people and ask questions ingame, you can try joining the channel "OOC", which is one of the primary out of character discussion channels for EVE's RP community.

From first glance, this looks exactly what I was looking for. I will get to reading it all when I have some time later today.

Thanks!

And check in at the EVE Fiction section of the forums. The threads tend to be the writers discussing and speculating about the lore and its finer points.

Technically, according to the lore, you're playing an immortal guy viewing the universe through a computer-rendered simulation that doesn't really care about the lesser residents of the universe save in that they must serve him or get blown up. Behaving like an MMO player that feels no need to roleplay and just mines and blows stuff up without regard for the in-universe consequences is actually technically better roleplaying than forming a social community based on the creation of characters that are emotionally believable form the perspective of a 21st century human.

Just pointing that out for you, egger. Lack of immersion is in fact part of the plot.

ehh...what?

What you say doesn't make any sense. Immersion is not lacking because the virtual reality is different than other MMORPG's, it is just different type of immersion. Just because the political situation, social structure, geography, technology or perceived expectations from the played character are different, even radically, doesn't mean you can't immerse yourself in those. Your character can be immortal guy viewing the universe through simulation (or whatever) but he/she is still supposed to have feelings, history, family, goals, beliefs, flaws, hopes and so on.

Since when did people need any excuse to completely ignore any aspect of roleplaying in MMORPG's? Why on earth would you even need to come up with one?

What Greybeard is getting at is that because of how the world is setup everyone roleplays, even if they don't think so themselves. Just playing the game normally as a mission runner, miner, alliance grunt or what ever is actually roleplaying. You don't have to go out of the way and roleplay some amarr slave lord here.

I disagree. I think the OP has a point - just because roleplaying in EVE might be a bit different from other MMO's doesn't mean that that roleplaying in EVE isn't legitimate. It seems to me that the learning curve is quite a bit steeper than other MMO's, but once you get the hang of things, there is definitely a place for people who want to role-play more seriously. I am hoping to be able to do this myself once I have mastered the basic skills.
