Rifter Jaguar, wolf and Vagabond is the way to go! My advice is to train bottom up minnie (didnt do that myself). train frig to max (t2 fittings) first, then cruiser (t2) and so on!

Minnies do both shield and armor well

A Caracal with assault launchers a couple large shield extenders, hardeners, and shield power relays or power diagnostic systems. this set up is great for l2s and u can tag along on l4s with a buddy with a stronger tank and not worry about some incoming fire not a light show

Some good posts but like all of eve, this bit can be a bit messy and huge...

simple answers: if you are looking for complexity it will take too long to explain

PVE = missiles
PVP= projectiles or lazors, (avoid hybrids till they are fixed)
haulers stick with the Gallente line, itty 5 is just huge with rigs
miners (only 1 line so no choices)

If you CAN fly something it doesn't mean you should
(ie. if you can fly a battleship, wait until you have at least lvl 3 skills for EVERY single skill listed in its pre-reqs... NO minimum skills are NOT good enough)

the simple progressions are these:

missiles caldari
Kestrel-caracal-drake-raven
lazors amarr
punisher-coercer-omen-harby-apoc
projectiles minmatar
rifter-thrasher-stabber-hurricane-tempest
hybrids Gallente
catalyst-thorax-myrmadon-megathron

this list ignores lots of possibilities inc. caldari hybrid ships, amarr drone and missile ships, minmatar missile ships and gallente drone ships ... by the time you can fly the Battlecruiser of whichever race, you should have a clue via missions or pvp of whatever interests you... and by then you'll have discovered the T2 ships :P

Kestrel -> Caracal -> Drake -> Raven -> Navy Raven

From there, get into the T2 ship of your choice: Cerberus, Nighthawk, Tengu, Golem.

Any of these ships are great solo PvE ships. For PvP, several are good damage assist ships for small gangs.

Personally, I'm a fan of the Navy Raven, but the more you fly the more interesting the game is.

Bhaalgorns are clearly the best. Noobs should be shooting for flying one of them... :)

Yes, the bhaalgorn is clearly the most OP faction bs out there, but not many new pilots will be able to afford this. I highly suggest the following for 'solo' work:

Frigate: Rifter
Cruiser: Thorax/Rupture
Battlecruiser: Drake/Hurricane

As you start to learn how the mechanics of the game work, move yourself from Caldari/Minmatar to Gallente/Amarr ships as a general rule of thumb (except the mach, you can always rely on the mach for exceptional fun). Blink

Eventually, you'll want to train for black ops. Don't question it. Just do it. And don't buy a widow. They're terribad.

Well, it's kind of hard to answer. If you like to fire Missiles, the only real option is Kestrel > Hawk > Caracal > Drake, and once you get good skills, the Raven (because it's a tank-breaker, not a tanker). If you on the other hand like to just fire regular guns, go for the Rifter > Thrasher > Rupture > Hurricane/Cyclone > Tempest/Maelstrom.

And when you reach a BC and haven't decided yet what you prefer, go for the Myrmidon/Drake/Hurricane or whichever of the Amarr ones is best (I've never flown an Amarr ship, so don't ask me about those).

Maelstrom for civic duty / saving the universe.
Personally training toward a perfectly skilled Tornado.

Mining:
I recommend quickly skilling up to the Caldari Osprey cruiser, then the mining barges.

Mission running:
Again, I like to recommend Caldari ships (though I also loved my Gallente Incursus frigate); this is because you can focus on missile skills and later drone skills for offensive firepower, and passive shield skills for defense. That kind of concentration scales quickly.
* Kestrel frigate (learn standard missiles) for level 1 missions;
* Merlin frigate (learn railguns and standard missiles) for level 1 missions;
* Cormorant destroyer (learn railguns and standard missiles) for level 1 missions;
* Caracal cruiser (learn heavy missiles and passive shield skills) for level 2 missions;
* Drake battlecruiser (learn drones, heavy missiles and passive shield skills) for level 3 missions and some level 4s;
* Gila pirate faction cruiser (learn drones, heavy missiles and passive shield skills) for level 4 missions; or
* Rattlesnake pirate faction battleship (learn drones, cruise missiles and passive shield skills) for level 4 missions.

PVP:
Frigates frigates frigates!
They're cheap, cost and combat effective, and always needed for scouting and tackling.
And new players can replace clones hellacheap compared to high skillpoint veterans!

But then my favorite ship, which I still sometimes fly for grins after so many years, is a Gallente Velator rookieship:
* Two Warrior II light scout drones;
* Micro Auxiliary Power Core I;
* Catalyzed Cold-Gas I Arcjet Thrusters (1 MN MWD) or Cold-Gas I Arcjet Thrusters (1 MN AB);
* 150mm Railgun II (or a named 150mm Railgun);
* Auto Targeting System I (don't turn it on -- even off it lets you add two more targets, for four total).

Good advice, esp. on the guns.
I do love me Rifters and Thrashers.

My fav Amarr ship is the Arbitrator (and Curse and Pilgrim), but that's because of the 150m3 drone bay! ^_^

Tengu is awesome! Great tank, awesome DPS (for the tank), and makes back the investment in no time. It will make every other ship except a carrier seem as flimsy as a paper boat on water.

otherwise, a drake is pretty awesome and worked for me for nearly a year from noob to nullsec just because of it's versatility, the benefits of missiles in PvE and a strong tank to protect my noobie ass.

I would say that this depends on the player's style.

For those that want to play the tackle role very well I would say that Interceptors are the primary choice followed by electronic attack frigates like the Keres.

For those that want to play heavy tackle or do some anti-drone warfare assault frigates are durable and reasonably quick with excellent damage potential.

And for those that want to learn more subtle things such as scouting and probing...covert ops frigates are excellent including the stealth bombers. Bombers can also fill the role of anti-BS/BC with their torpedoes and excellent range. Please try not to use them as tackle if you can help it. You will get neuted...droned, or smart-bombed out of your ship with little recourse.

As you advance in any of those roles you will get to HAC's, AF's and Command ships and eventually black ops BS's like the Widow or Panther.

My best advice after nearly eight years of EVE is to specialize. I made a lot of mistakes starting out and my skill-points suffered for it. Specialize and use implants if you can afford them and try to train whole sets of skills and re-spec your skill points each year to take advantage of your new goals. The ships will come...people have already built them ;)

Minmatar - Rifter hands down, speedy cheap and a whole ton of fun, in PvE or PvP
Gallente - Imicus for PvE, get use those those drones, you'll be using them often, tough lil nut and cheap
- Incursus for PvP, strap on those blasters and just go for it.
Amarr - Punisher is a tough nut to crack, if your looking at PvP fit some autocannons to really make it shine
Caldari - The Kestrel, 4 launchers boom boom boom boom. What's not to like?

Beyond that? Eventually the Megathron. Just looks so damn good.

I'd recommend...
Frigate: Rifter. Fast, versatile, cheap, and easy to fit.
Destroyer: Thrasher. I haven't flown Thrashers (mine is a Cormorant) but apparently projectiles are the current Good Thing.
Cruiser: Blackbird. Decent range, heavy ECM capability, and the midslots for a good shield tank (providing you don't mind losing the ECM)
Battlecruiser: Toss-up between Hurricane and Drake. 'Cane has speed, instant-DPS, and style, while the Drake has longer range, better anti-frigate capabilities, and lacks the OMG-too-many-red-bars-PANIC effect of armour tanking.

I haven't flown any battleships yet, but I hear the Scorpion is good for PvP, and the Raven is good for missions.

Drone boats ! Pretend you're already flying that carrier ! Pirate
Vexor->Myrmidon->Dominix
If you like little fighters to command you can not go wrong.
The Vexor is the best T1 non-faction drone boat hands down,
The Myrmidon is one of the best and most versatile ships in the game. Armour tank it, Shield Tank, Hell, fit triple reppers on it, whatever is your game, this baby will DELIVER.
The Dominix can be insanely effective in small scale PVP.
Drones will keep shooting even if jammed in PVE.
You'll need to train drone skills anyway if you want to fly anything bigger than a cruiser.
To top it off, you can pretend you're Nimitz or Yamamoto crushing your feeble enemies !

For pve my personal long time favourite has been drake. Why? With low skills and low cash its able to do any lvl 3 without too much hassle ... once you get good skills and good fitting you can use it to do lvl 4 with it even. In fact a very well fitted drake is able to get an awesome tank combined with decent dps. After you fly drake for a while you have to choose go BS or specialize in T2/T3 smaller ships. In that case i would go or Nighthawk or Tengu (nighthawk is cheaper, Tengu is just AWEsome but comes at a price) and forget about Battleship ... of course that is my opinion and many might disagree

For me, I worked my way to the Apoc and Abaddon, though a large amount of my time was in battlecruisers. As such, decide what you want to fly eventually and fly a corresponding battlecruiser.

IE: You want to fly a missile boat, go for a Drake. Lasers? Hit up a Prophecy.

For Mining ...
Mining Frigate -> Mining Cruiser (if available) -> Retriever -> Hulk -> Orca (Rorqual)

Hulk will give the best yield you can have and an Orca is an extraordinary hauler.
In other words, don't care too much about the racial industrials for hauling.

For PVE
Gallente: Vexor -> Dominix
Caldari: Drake -> Tengu

Just keep two things in mind ...
1) Only fly what you can afford to lose
2) Being able to fly something does not mean, that you're good at flying it,
i.e. don't forget about the relevant skill (mining crystals or missile specialization and so on)
