researching blueprints

I'm new to researching blueprints and I have a few bpo's that I want to research both materials and time for the blueprints.
I've been reading about doing it and getting them higher so that it will cost less in time and materials.

I'm at a mobile lab right now that my corp and alliance have, what do I put in the M.L. + field? It just says 1 right now, could I change that?
I'm having trouble understanding the various levels for a 'perfect no waste' type of thing.

Could anyone explain this, or is there a good guide out there for it?

Thanks

There you go-

Google is your friend.
Did this for a while but my ADHD kicked in and I had to go kill stuff. Good money in invention just don't rely on it as your primary income.

Take a look at the blueprint calculator on my site. you can play with the numbers, to find an optimal point for research.

Short form:

Most blueprints have some waste. This is normally something like 10% (where less than half a unit of waste is ignored). This waste is multiplied by 1/(1+ME of the blueprint)

So 1 ME is half the waste of an unresearched blueprint.
But then you have to take it to 3 to halve it again.
Then to 7. Then 15. and so on.

It is possible to eliminate waste entirely from some blueprints. Others would take years of research (to make it perfect), just to eliminate 1 final tritanium of waste. So there's an optimal point to research to. A blueprint calculator will help you here by doing the math for you.

Aside from that, make sure you train your Production Efficiency skill to 5. Each level will reduce your waste significantly. (at 0, you're using 125% of the base materials. 1, takes it down to 120%.)

IMO once you got it to between under 2% and 1% waste I wouldn't bother researching it any more. Let someone who'd rather have the perfect BPO waste his time and money. I mean there could be times when you'd need more efficiency than that, but if you don't, don't bother researching more.

It's not uncommon to research Ammo BPOs till they're waste free. Or Fuel block BPOs. These rarely take more than a week or so though.

Just look at how much time you'll have them cooking and how much that'll cost you, against how much you'll save.
