The indies are for hauling, yes. They can work as miners but you get horrible yield for the time spent.

Try an exequror for now. It can only fit 4 lasers but it has a cargo bonus. Ships like the thorax and vexor can get better yield but are a bit out there on price for you.

I'd highly suggest the retriever after that as your next stepping stone as the procuror might actually be a downgrade

Okay,

1.) NEVER mine in an industrial ship. Even a frigate makes more money by mining with small lasers. Industrials are there to haul stuff not to mine.

2.)

Atm each race has got a frigate and cruiser that gets bonuses to mining (or mining drones).

So ship progression atm is:

1.) Racial Mining frigate
2.) Racial Mining cruiser (if you want, could skip straight to 3)
3.) Retriever
4.) Covetor (could skip straight to 5)
5.) Hulk

Keep in mind that racial frigates are going to change in the Summer expansion. After that there will be a new ship (ORE Frigate) for mining. *ORE is also the inventor of the mining barges and exhumers*

E: Amarr already changed to the new racial frigates and don't have a frigate with mining bonuses anymore

I know you mentioned indy ships, but in case you are still a trial here are some options:

TRIALS:

Vexor: on my setup i was able to fit 4 mining I lasers and later on 4 mining II lasers. Vexor has a big drone bay so you can take 5 mining drones (5 m3 each) and 5 light or medium scout drones (5 m3 each and 10 m3 each). The good thing about the Vexor is if rats spawn in a belt, you have enough shield to where you can recall the mining drones and put out your scout drones. If you are a trial still you cannot use indys or GSC (giant secure containers), which means you have to haul once your cargo load is full. Since you have to haul you can stick to 0.8 - 1.0 sec space and find a roid belt close to a station. You can go to a 0.5 - 0.7 belt too but rats spawn periodically here.


FULL MEMBERS:

If you are a full member that means you can train up anchoring and also train up for using industrial ships. Even though you may not have a lot of ISK now I recommend buying 2-3 GSC and anchoring them in 0.5 - 0.7 roid belts. You have to anchor GSC at least 5000 meters away from roids, wrecks and other secure containers. And you should try and keep your own GSC close to one another. Once you have put your GSC in space from your hauler, right click it and select anchor then wait 60 seconds. Once anchored right click it and set a password. Once all that is done you can just park your mining ship within 2500m of your GSC and transfer ore from your ships cargo hold to the GSC.

If you do the above, then you dont have to fit rigs and low modules for max cargo capacity. Fill up your GSCs then go to station in the system and swap ships to your industrial and make some hauls to pick up your ore. When mining with GSC, or just in general i recommend bookmarking your GSC's or the roids that you are mining. That way you dont have to warp to the default roid belt warp in point, then move a few thousand KM before you can start re-mining again or emptying out your GSCs.

As far as ships go:
Vexor
Retriever
Covetor
Hulk

If you have the Retriever it takes roughly 28 days to train up to the Covetor. If you do a lot of mining you could have enough saved up for a Hulk by the time the 28 days are complete. Also look at the training requirements for Strip Miners, Strip Miner II and Modulated Strip Miner II (and mining crystals). And if you are gonna be mining in a Hulk in the future, then i recommend also training up for the use of tanking modules and rigs.

Amarr have the Tormentor mining frigate.

The Amarr and Gallente do not have a specialist mining cruiser. The Amarr have the Arbitrator while the Gallente have the Vexor.

The best mining cruiser if you will be working with friends is the Osprey, with a close second (for fleet mining) being the Scythe. The advice regarding the Exequror is sound: the extra cargo capacity means fewer trips back to station when mining solo.

The proposed updates to mining ships will happen sometime after this Summer expansion. The devblog in question tentatively proposes having the mining barges sorted out before the Winter expansion.

If you are serious about mining as a profession, I would highly recommend looking for a player corporation that specialises in mining and industry.

And Gallente ships are beautifully asymmetric. It is the symmetric ships that are the ugly stepsisters of the EVE design world.

Thanks everybody, you all been very helpful, I have read everyone's posts and understand CCP is going to be mixing it up for me here shortly but figured until they change that, I found that I should look into either the exequror or the Vexor and buying some of these GCS's (?), not sure what those are (newb I know) but I will research it. Think someone provided a weblink for mining too so I may go and give that a read.

I appreciate all your help. I figured the Industrial ships (or Indies I gather) were designeed for a different purpose which is why I decided to start the thread and ask to be safe. I didn't want to blow 4mil on the wrong ship, and being a newbie.... I am proud of my first 4mil

makes sense to me. I have never used cans but I can see that its simply transferign them over into them like you would your ships cargo hold to your hanger, so this may be an option since things are changing next month in regards to the new ORE ship I hear?

right now the Equror or vexor is still 1 - 1.5 mil above my price range for the cheapest find on the market.

I am suprised that nobody has mentioned to you that mining is the most belittled profession in the game

while it might seem a good idea at this moment to you, if you will look around in different places, you will see that nearly everyone in Eve is out to kill miners even though (perhaps because) they are the most defenseless targets in the game.

people like This specialize in killing miners for fun, and the biggest alliance in the game pays 25-100m per 10 mining barge kills a pilot recieves

I don't think so, that will probably take a few months from now.

If I can offer you one piece of advice, it would be wear sunscreen don't mine alone.

Even with the newest of setups your effective yield will be much higher when you're taking part in an organised mining fleet than if you're doing it alone and trying to work out how to best get your ore to the station, etc.
