And the botters in EVE thought an eventual permaban was a harsh penalty.

Governments can be rather slow to catch up with changes in the gaming industry but eventually they do. Gaming in the future is definately going to be under much greater scrutiny especially with the sale of virtual items becoming more prolific.

With more and more real world value placed on virtual items could we see an acceleration of cases in the future over the loss of items in-game. If we start seeing successful cases then it could be the death knell for games such as EVE as it would make them a huge liability.

Could we see CCP having to change EVE in the future due to governmental pressures?

Nex (Cash Shop) / Aurum - removing sand from the sandbox since Incarna. Currently the only use for aurum is to buy virtual items in the in-game store, but Cockerill expects to expand its uses in the future.

For perspective, something like 1 in 3 Koreans play some sort of MMO, E-Sports is more popular than any sport including Football in the country, and there are quite a few laws already enacted regarding video game regulation like this.

yeah, these people literally suicide over mmos, and the goal is not to prohibit trade of items, but to promote less time at the computer by making it less profitable

Yes I'm aware of Serenity, but would CCP peel off countries from Tranquility though if for example those countries made it a real world criminal offense for something like stealing a Plex in-game. Plex is one item in EVE that has a definative real world value already.

Take a PLEX out of the game if you can, and bring it to your friend down the road - and ask them how much it's actually worth. Considering you can buy them readily enough for real-life cash, and yet you cannot legally sell them on, it would suggest to me that their alue outside of the game is negligible.

This is all about money and taxes.

When governments get involved in stuff like this it is because they want their cut.

Putting someone on trial and putting someone in jail cost money.
I bet you 9 out of 10 people caught for doing this get a very large fine instead of actual jail time.

I am surprised Governments don't send out something to all the online gaming companies saying fill this out so we can go after them.
And get there cut of the cash

And I know someone who got punched by roommate for ganking him. Should actions not have consequences? If said consequences happen to be from your local law enforcement instead of roommate, that's also working as intended. Don't want consequences? Get a room, or move to Somalia, whichever applies. So no, we don't need additional shards. Roll

Example of a case already. Another Interesting read
Sooner or later digital items will be classified by the law in most countries and that could have many ramifications to online gaming.

wait are you trying to say that getting punched IRL is a reasonable consequence for ganking somebody in eve

you're aware that EVE is actually a game right?

They do. In this case the roommate is guilty of assault and could expect a criminal conviction and fine for throwing the first punch.

someone people are pretty insane when it comes to being beaten in a game. Did you ever hear of the guy who spent months tracking down a person then traveled to his house and stabbed him? THis was a reaction to the victim stabbing the attacker in a game of counter strike or something stupid like that.

While thats the most insane case, theres nothing to stop 2 roomies from having a fight if one kept being a pain in the game lol

Best solution to botting involves finding where the botters operate (esp the RWT ones) and a couple tomahawk cruise missiles... dont need those "people" on this planet lol

Actually, he was promptly told by the cops to suck it up, because it's his words against his roommate's. Civil court's that way.

How about just punch him back and say "wtf is wrong with you, dude?"

No good deed goes unpunished
