Dust514 Logi Speculation

No real point to this post. Just a bored at work on a Friday afternoon speculative post about logistics in Dust.

So like I said, it’s a boring Friday afternoon here at work, so I find my mind wandering and find myself once again contemplating how exactly logistics will work in Dust. I have two logistic toons in Eve, and I absolutely love being a logistics pilot (don’t do Incursions anymore though – I find plain ‘ol missions to be more fun). There is no doubt in my mind that I will be focusing on being a logistics grunt once the game becomes available to all. Although I signed up for the Beta, I don’t realistically expect to get in. It’d sure be nice though! Getting off topic here…

Anyway – I’ve spent the last several weeks wondering exactly how logistics will work. The only thing I’ve found in my limited internet scouring (read: first two or three Google links) is some Gallente vehicle designed for logistics. But how exactly is it going to work? Let’s forget the vehicle for a moment, and just look at the 2 legged logistics grunt.

In Eve, you have to lock onto your target and activate the rep’s on that target. You can repair as many pilots as you have reps, or you can focus it all on one or two. Do you suppose it will be the same type of thing in Dust? You need to aim down the sights of your rep gun and pull the trigger? The reps only work for whoever you’re actively aiming at? Works essentially like a typical gun as far as hit detection, except that instead of delivering damage with each hit, you bring repairs? If that’s the case, it would seem to imply that there’s no real way to repair multiple people at once.

The other way I envision is some sort of hip fire that just shoots out a cone of repair. It’d essentially be an area of effect repair gun. Not aimed at any one person in particular, but if you happen to be in the cone, you get repairs.

If it is an area of effect type, would it be where everyone gets the same amount of repairs regardless of how many are in the cone, or would it be a set amount divided amongst all that are in the cone? So the more people in the cone, the less each person gets.

Would the logistics grunts only true weapon be the pistol and knife, and the logistics tool would be in place of their main weapon? Or would it be possible to trade in your pistol for a smaller repair tool of a different type? Armor repair “rifle” and a hull repair “pistol”? “Pistol” does much less repair per…cycle?.. than the “rifle”, but hey…it’s something.

Back to the logistics vehicle, do you suppose it would just be a quick little beast (much like the t2 logi ships), but have a turret that delivers more repairs per cycle than the more portable units carried by the grunts?

Which tank system will prevail – shields or armor? Just thought of this while typing this post. I imagine there will be a separate set of skills and equipment for each (like Eve), but how to determine which route to go..hmm…

In Eve – there are 4 races, and among those 4 races are 2 T2 armor logi ships and 2 T2 shield logi ships. One of each tank type can be made cap stable, and one of each tank type needs a cap buddy. Do you suppose there will be a similar set up in Dust (needing a cap buddy)? I wonder how that would work.

I’m very interested, and can’t wait for CCP to release more information about how logi’s will work. In the mean time, anyone care to speculate?

At first glance, I notice there's a lot of similarity between Dust modules and EVE modules.

For AOE, maybe a "bubble" you throw on the ground?

I envision two types of logistics for grunts, and possibly in some ways vehicles.

First is a bubble effect. There is nanite bubbles for ammo, so one would assume it would work for shield and armor. Deploy and heal.

A targeted one would be a focused stream of nanites or energy for shields. Hits and recharges or doesn't. But it hits and disperses, I expect a vehicles would be the same. Good piloting for any arial logistics, though a more wide cone would be interesting.

Beyond tank, I would guess that medical requirements, much like hull repping need a more direct approach of up close and stickem with biogel.

To quote Lfod Shi

The ratting itself is PvE. Getting away with it is PvP.

Bubbles could be interesting - especially if you could throw them. Toss it and it expands upon impact. Be kind of like the logi version of a grenade.

dust 514 is just another way that people are trying to destroy eve, same thing happened with minecraft craze and the relentless attacks of FB games etc, like all things it will pass, just ignore it and it will go away

I'm scared to think about it quite frankly. I'm going to play a round of Halo Reach right now (hit up Gogela) and I'm going to think armor powers in TU types are similar.

God I'm not looking forward to the PS3 controller for FPS. I love the XBox controller. I wonder if I can get a mod for it...

I'd prefer the good ol mouse/ kb combo. I've heard Dust supports that on the ps3 so \0/

Surely that would only work is there was a children's section?

Now, more than ever, we need a dislike button.

The "drop ship" model will be available in different types (limited hull designs though, due to limitations of the PS3 architecture), some which are specialised for logistics. You target the tank or other vehicle that you're trying to repair and activate the logistics module. This was discussed at Fanfest, and may not be the final design — the Dust 514 folks had a slide up showing a tank with two dropships in a typical two-logi setup. I gather that logistics modules may not necessarily be available during the public beta, it sounded like there was a lot of stuff surrounding vehicles which wasn't ready for publication.

As for infantry, they were using "nano hives" on the battlefield to repair and rearm. These appeared to work along the same lines as the RMT P2W "Nano Ammo" April Fool's devblog some time back.

I wish I could travel back in time and slap the dev that came up with the name 'logistic' for these cruisers that have NOTHING to do with actual logistics, and beat him with a dictionary. If this usage of the word 'logi' spreads to the PS3 community as well... *shudder*

Well logistics is the movement of stuff from one point to another, which pretty much sums up remote armour repairers and shield transporters which both involve transporting hitpoints from one ship to another.

Not exactly dictionary definition but still valid.

Nice try... but in that case the enemies shooting bullets are doing some fine logistics as well. Lol

The sad part of the ship class though is that it actually says 'support cruiser' in the description. Not perfect, but still much better. Triage would have been even better, but that one is hogged by the carriers, and those wasted it one some stupid module (I can't remember which one came first though, carriers or logis).
