Top level domain name extensions (.com, .edu, .gov etc.) are determined by powerfull entities that run the internet. I doubt CCP could even manage to get them to return their phone calls.

not entirely true. IANA is either selling or considering selling TLDs. but they are unlikely to be at all cheap.

Please learn internet structure 101 before posting crazy ideas. The internet doesn't work like that. Please research atleast a tiny bit about top-level-domains before trying to talk about them.

both those for and against the adult enterntainment industry have lobbied to get an official .xxx extension and have been shot down lots of times.

Proponents want it to make their sites easy to find and to at least look like they care about kids hitting naughty sites since .xxx be easy as hell to firewall away. And the the dirty movie haters think...damn I like that latter part.

If an extension which makes sense gets shot down....don't think a midsize game company will fair better anytime soon.

Well that and like above...if IANA would actuallly budge on this, IANA doesn't take plex payments lol.

You do know you can make up what ever crazy domain names you want, right? In fact there is an entire underground DNS system that anyone can use if they want, you can make up your own crazy doman .thisismydomainandyoucanthaveit.

But then people will only be able to get to it if they're using the underground DNS servers too. Which means that very few people will actually be using them. Sure, if you use other DNS servers you can use whatever address you want. Heck, I could have my own "eveonline.com" server if I wanted to, that doesn't mean anyone else could ever get to it through that address because they wouldn't be using my DNS server.

Making a DNS server is really quite simple, it's making one that's recognized by the rest of the world that's hard/impossible. And unless the rest of the world recognizes it, it means pretty much nothing.

Fair enough, all I was adressing is how top level domain names work.

As for the social, political and comercial implications, you're correct. We'll see what happens when ICANN does what it wants, despite the whines from governments and other anti-competitive groups.
