Attacking mission NPCs. What did he try to do?

I was minding my own business yesterday, farming L3 missions.

In the middle of a mission, some guy with a vexor showed in the first pocket I was in, put out his drones and started shooting at a NPC which was the mission objective.
I was in the middle of fighting another group, and wasn't very close the the objective NPC.

Since the NPC was in a BS, and had a few cruiser friends with him, needless to say, the vexor buddy blew up spetaculary before he could warp away, and his drones died a moment after.

The NPCs didn't go after me, and they returned to their position until I finished the group I was engaged with.

So...

What was the deal?
He tried to hit and run and hoped I will pull aggro?
He wanted to kill the NPC so I will fail the objective?

It was nice getting a few extra drones and named T1 items, and salvage his ship before I called it a day. But I still don't get it what he was trying to do. He didn't even accept my convo request (I would have left his things there if he had).

How old was the character? >_> I did a lot of stupid things when I first started out.

If I remember right, since the end of 2010. So just below 1 year old.

Thank you for his defense and my activity, but it did actually happen, and I actually don't really know what he tried to do.

Yeah well I figured he was a fool when he got blown up.

But what he tried to achieve under it? He hoped he would kill the NPC and make me fail the mission? Suicide kill the NPC?

I'm 99% sure that YOU won't fail the mission because someone else killed all the NPCs. More likely he was just using the mission as a source of ISK. For a new player a battleship spawn in the safety of high sec is good stuff, if you can kill it.

If it was a mission where the mission objective is to pick something up from the rat's wreck/can, he could have been trying to steal that so you couldn't complete the mission. He would then offer to sell it back to you for ISKies.

or if item needed off main rat - would wait for you to flip the can for it, to gain the kill rights

Perhaps he was just dead drunk or otherwise under influence.

Something similar happened to me a while ago but was part of a well thought out plan to kill noobs.

I was doing a Level 4 in my Abaddon and someone warped in with a Coercer. He attacked one of the NPCs, and was promptly destroyed.

I had warped out when he warped in, thinking others would come in with him and gank me, but I did see him explode on my way out.

So I warped back in and made my way to his wreck. Checking it, he had quite a bit of salvage, I mean A LOT of it. To the ordinary noob, this translated to lots of ISK, but if checked carefully, it was the lower value salvage worth about 1 million tops.

I was about to loot his wreck, when a thought occurred to me due to my unhealthy paranoia. I thought, what if he's still here in a cloaked ship, waiting for me to take his cheap loot?

So I fly out a bit, align to station, pass by his wreck, loot it, then warp and dock. Wait out the 15 minute aggression timer and I get a chat invite from him. He congratulated me on my align-loot-warp and confirmed that he was cloaked in a T3 IN THE SAME POCKET (alt that's in the same corporation, possibly?)!!!

Would have lost a 100million+ BS. Thank you, unhealthy paranoia.

unhealthy paranoia is very healthy in this game!
