I'm not sure that sending thousands of tear stained rage EVE mails to CCP is the answer. We might want to restrict it to the ones that don't joke about it in the following sentence. Smile

I mean as a matter of permanent policy. The people who are joking about it are highlighting the farce that is threatening to kill yourself over a video game.

If we are really genuinely concerned about people with suicidal tendencies harming themselves over Eve, then they should be reported to the relevant authorities and banned from the game that is apparently causing them such anguish.

I fully agree. As long as we are clear that your point really doesn't pertain to this particular situation.

As a general rule though, yes.

Most real corporations have zero tolerance for this sort of bad publicity, It will be interesting to see what happens. But then again when they actively promote grief you should expect this sort of stuff. Personally i feel it went way way to far, you do not ever encourage someone to do something like that. Most of us are adults and know better. EVE has potential but they need to learn that catering to degenerate behaviour is detrimental to being in business. For every hard core pyp'er out there, there is at least 10 people that do not care for that type of game play. In the end, I think EVE has to share part of the blame.

Confirming that internet spaceships are in fact incredibly ******* serious and the next time I lose several pixellated harvesters mindlessly drilling ice in high sec, I should express my suicidal tendencies because this world is just not worth living in...

They could at that. This story has legs enough. Like them or loathe them, The Guardian dead tree press, for example (Brit left-of-centre cause-championing newspaper, as linked to previously in this thread) would jump on this like you wouldn't believe. I certainly wouldn't want Polly Toynbee on my case -the sanctimony would be unbearable. In perpetuity.

However, Mittani has made his apology, let's see how much this will ameliorate things. Don't hold the front page.

It is interesting how quickly Mittani's support in this thread has gone from "he did nothing wrong, suck it up losers" to "here's his sincere apology, please take it at face value".

Not expressing support of one side of the other. Just pointing out how fickle it appears is all.

That's the sort of thing that happens when the subject of all this scorn is halfway over the Atlantic. It's not so much fickle as it is acknowledging that his opinion on what he did is a hell of a lot more important than our opinion about what he did. Personally, I don't even think he has anything to apologize for, but that's me. He clearly feels an apology was necessary, so he did.

If anything, it should put all of this stupid "THIS IS ALL PLANNED GOON CTA DAMAGE CONTROL RABLLERABLLERABBLE" nonsense to bed, since so many of us were absolutely not on the same page as he was about it.

here is my view,

CCP created a unique game, and it definately attracted all kinds of unique players. the game has a unique learning curve. and the game has some unique leaning towards the dark side of things. that being so, it is inevitable that someone will rear up the dark side of his brain to commit some mischief in game, but for some committing mischief or creating the bad ass empire in game is a full time job. for some even, not having a good despicable laugh at the fallen is a sad affair. to some, they use this game to release the inner devil on unsuspecting victims.

so what did this bloke do at fanfest that made me wanna post this ? he said something in real life that encourages destruction of real human life, and bear in mind that it is not in game, and in full view of public. and to add fuel to fire, he encouraged thousands of players to do the same, to taunt a distraught person to end his own life. he should have just left his devil in game, but that being said, he probably is demonized in real life and has always been like that, i wouldnt know of course.

i have seen and heard numerous occasions of players taunting/attacking other players with the intent to create mental harm/distress directly and indirectly thru scams, etc. in short, within the eve game, the creation of such a scenario is the sole purpose of certain players. and i have seen players getting banned before if i am not wrong (a failed grief attempt and attacker uses racists remarks on the victim, etc). for the purpose of making a strong example of the mitani's potentially deadly behavior to fellow human beings, i like CCP to pass him the life time ban on all accounts (CCP may choose to refund him unused subs, i hope he doesnt buy a gun with the refunds to grief someone in real life).

1 of the raw truths of the game --> kill or be killed. but does he need to bring it up front to some depressed folk who does not need to hear it in his face? and to say it at a fanfest? and to publicly encourage other players to do it? yes it may sound like a joke at first to some, BUT i will not laugh at it. for followers of the mitani, shame on you if you think it to be trivial that you can impose on and exert your taunts of suicide on a helpless person. i will like to see your reaction when the tables turn upon yourselves the same heartless way.

being in a position of power and having an alleviated position to implant strong suggestions to players (and CCP devs), will he next encourage all less well off players to commit suicide? or will he be more bold as to say something else in everadio that is related to real life suicide again? will he then suggest to all his "followers" in alliance and in game to vehemently strike out at all vunerable players? or suggest to them that they could make a move like he did at fanfest and openly "declare" taunts at mentally challenged players? so now has mitani become a symbol of ultimate power in eve that he can command real life players to his beck n call?

in short, CCP should and MUST make an example of this event that has happen, let your evil game character remain in game. be a mature man and have respect for real life. CCP need to promote the fact that real life is what makes this game, and the game should not be used to destroy real life.

again i motion for the all accounts ban for this person who instigated this in full view of public. i do not think anyone in real life will be having a good laugh being on the recieving end of such degrading insults and attacks, and it is morally degrading for some one to just mindlessly laugh at the victim without thought. if such is the case, then CCP has not made a game for players to be positively challenging, but morally degrading in nature. so to CCP, you have to put your foot down right here.

cheers

Mittani is certainly a nicer guy than me - I wouldn't apologize for mocking someone who tried to garner sympathy in a spaceship game by dragging out a bunch of (unproven) facts about his personal life. If you're in such a bad shape maybe you shouldn't try to drop your problems on random strangers online and impose yourself on them?

I would never apologize for mocking someone that rude.

The Mittani wrote:
This has been hanging over my head since Thursday when I stumbled away from the Alliance Panel with a vague sense that I had done something horrible. I didn't know the extent of how much of a shitheel I had been until today, when footage of the presentation went up. As many of you now know, I gave out the in-game character name of a Mackinaw miner if anyone had wanted to blow him up - except that I was so smashed that I didn't recall exactly what I said (as anyone who was there can tell you). When I came to the forums the other day and saw threads complaining about my behavior - not remembering what I'd said - I assumed that I was enduring the usual anti-Goonswarm trolls, and posted something like "deal with it~" in my usual "The Mittani" way.

Then I landed, and saw the article listing my actual quote.

Christ.

I feel absolutely ashamed of my behavior at the Alliance Panel. It's one thing to play a villain in an online roleplaying game - when I post on these forums or on twitter, I usually do so as 'The Mittani', and do my level best to convince everyone that I'm an unrepentant space villain, as that kind of facade provides an in-game advantage to me and my alliance. But I am not that character in real life, as anyone who has met me can attest. I went way, way, /way/ past the line on Thursday night by mocking the Mackinaw miner at a real-life event. I, as a person, am not the entity that I play in EVE; I am not actually a sociopath or a sadist, and I certainly don't want people to kill themselves in real life over an internet spaceship game, no matter what I may say or do within the game itself. CCP may say 'EVE is Real', but EVE is not real - and the line between the game and reality should not be overstepped.

I'm relieved to discover that the Mackinaw miner is doing fine and mining away, despite being blown up by Goonswarm in-game. He deserves, and he has, my heartfelt apologies - here in public as well as a private apology. There's no excuse for what I did - while some might try to use my inebriation as a mitigating factor, I put myself in that compromised mental state, and the guilt of that is entirely mine.

If I could go back in time and not have included the slide mentioning the miner, I would do so. While the Eve Online character "The Mittani" would never apologize for any sort of villany in game, I myself, as Alex Gianturco, feel utterly ashamed and sickened by my behavior.

Now move along, we have better things to do than comment on one persons (drunk, but no excuse itself) comments to a question at a party (hosted by CCP, so what?) posting no real-life information, only in-game info (which happens all the time making fun of people about what they do in-game using their in-game info).
