You are absolutely right and I too would not consider making lurid or sexist comments "male banter" as I tried to make clear in my first post. I was just pointing out that, for whatever reason, quite a lot of the women I have met seem unable to understand how the banter works (or even realise that it is JUST banter) and take offense at stuff that any male player would have laughed about.

That said, there are a few women I have met who do get it and I am very happy to fly with them and would be delighted if one of them joined my corp. It sounds like you could be one of them Silfar

I'll keep that in mind... currently in a training corp in an effort to learn how not to die stupidly in lowsec ;) I'll be shopping soon.

When I said my corp I meant the corp I am a member of but most of the guys (including the CEO) are 30+, many of them married and so not the knuckle draggers you'd be wanting to avoid.

How do you feel about wormhole space? Lol Skill requirements are a little higher than most.

I've yet to be in wormhole space, but I'm looking forward to heading there. Hopefully, by the time I'm thru the curriculum in OUCH, I will be an asset rather than a burden to any corp. SP wise, I'm approaching 7 mil on this pilot, but I'm not sure the allocation of points is aligned with what you'd be looking for. PM me, and we can chat about it... i'm interested in knowing more about your corp.

more women would not hurt in the game, it would temper the aggression and bring the community to a balance

I remember there was an initiative of an EVE-blogger (name eludes me, sorry!) who felt the need to reach out to women

What I thought was "Well I hope you don't come up with a vanity solution"

CCP shouldnt change the game itself , it's perfectly going in the way it should. Pilots, whether PvP, PvE care more about the game being stable, enjoyable than your gender.

The attitude of a fair few boys/men is what can be frustrating playing as a female . They really lack some perspective and 'general' manners and its quite condecending and be-littleling at times. I (try) to just live with it and go with the flow because I'm not the type to scream and shout about it but I'm not giving up my identity because the game's harsh environment lends itself more to douchebags (Was a rude awakening to realize it)

4 more 'silly' things:
* When you talk to guys personally they get a lot more mellow, vulnerable and reasonable. Its as if they dont have to compete for a moment. Same in RL really, but keeps surprising me
* The boob-slider is a guy's fashion sense.
*I can be very nice and understanding, flexible and it's appreciated. But don't cherrypick please. Territorial, vengeful, planning and annoyed by the slightest things. Yes, I know those feelings and I can assure you dont want a 50/50 game (unless you like to go *beep* insane)
*Despite knowing a few other women in-game I prefer meeting up with friends in RL. If I talk ingame to them its mostly about.....spaceships! Ofcourse some chat about RL but it isnt a nail-polish clique

This game is boring, repetetive, fairly abstract and rather time-consuming. What you can accomplish with your time investment is either piling up fake money or pixel ship kills, both completely meaningless even in-game, or, in rare cases, a certain degree of celebrity status among a bunch of fat smelly men suffering from Asperger's. Some might say you can make all sorts of experiences playing Eve but for the most part the experiences Eve gives you are about repetition, tedium and being a sad jerk while interacting with the very limited set of people who are mentally disabled enough to waste their time and money on this game. In fact, just spending one or two days outside probably gives you a wider array of quality experiences than a year of playing Eve extensively. And conversation with other players is usually restricted to nerdy tech babbling, grunting, bawling and making fart sounds with your armpits.

So, why in hell would women play this game? I don't even know why men play it.

WiS would have appealed to women.

Seriously.

I recall my Ex who played WoW and she was just as much into the appearance of her "toon" as she was adept at playing the actual game.

And, from my experience training women in the firearms world, if you teach them how to deal with stuff that they find scarey, they will follow your instructions TO THE LETTER. This is why female students were always better shots.

So, if there was a drive to bring women to the game, and PROPERLY guide them in PVP (yes, PVP), they might actually enjoy it.

Because if there is one thing a woman cannot stand (having trained scores of them and having been raised an only son in a "hive of daughters") , it would be the way noobs are told so little about this game and then getting OMGWTFPWNGANKED by some aspergian loser saying "Boom! Headshot! Phag GBTW loser! Ha ha!". You see, the women won't want to play that kind of game with that kind of person because they usually know better than to sink to that level. This is why they pay lower car insurance in the real world, as an example. When the guy in the Datsun B210 tries to race them, they ignore him, you see.

So I think that the basis of giving the women something they like (and the fashion engine that WiS is will appeal to a lot of them) and not letting the game continue to be a "he who is most neckbearded and least of having a life wins" will bring them to the game.

Yeah yeah I know. But the killboard! My stats! It's a sandbox! Marsha Marsha Marsha! All that other crap. Some of you guys should try viewing yourselves from the outside if you can stand it.

Sadly, a stricter policy of harassment or ways to mitigate it would also be needed because some of your neckbeards don't know how to act when a woman is present. Seriously I have heard of some horror stories from hacker/tech conventions. Pathetic. Maybe you shouldn't try to see yourself from the outside as the knowledge of knowing how pathetic you are would kill you out of sheer disgust.

Otherwise, this game is going to continue to be a raging sausage fest. And if some of you are proud of that, you might want to reconsider your sexual preference.

My wife never worries about that. Mostly because she's a really good shot with a rifle. Shocked

This has happened to me a couple of times, and not just in Eve. Typically we have a good laugh when I point out I'm not really female. Only once has someone (in Everquest, a loooong time ago) gone full ****** on me for it, and that was even funnier, tbh.

I've tried to get the wife interested in EvE, she has no interest what so ever. She prefers that other game & Farmville.

Edit: I asked her again and she said it's a - "cutthroat, male testosterone dominated game and it just seems full of griefing and hatred." - direct quote.

She elaborated some more but that's the cliff notes version.

I play video games to get away from my wife. Fact.

Trust me, I almost know what I'm doing.

Uhh... isn't that why guys play games... to get away from the women who otherwise dominate their life? Lol

The attitude is not overly different to other games....and lots of people of all genders are put off of eve because they hear some crap about how everyone is nasty all the time, no one is helpful etc etc etc

Its certainly no worse than say, Halo, with the advantage that you get to blow people out of the sky if they are idiots.

Socialising and co-operative play are probably more vital in eve than in any other game. I can happily solo my way through most games without speaking to another individual, yet in Eve, most people I know have 8-10 chat channels open, even if they run solo in their corp.

The problem is that what the media, or perhaps, individuals represent Eve as is not an entirely accurate picture.

Sure, it is cutthroat, sure, people can steal all your stuff, if you let them. Sure, they can blow your expensive ship up because they want to.....But, that does not mean that everyone (even the people who do the aforementioned stuff) in eve are not also helpful, and chatty, and funny, and smart individuals.

If you approach people in eve with a healthy dose of skepticism (As hopefully you do IRL too), then its np.

Of course there are misogynistic/ homophobic/racist comments, but in that case I choose my (ingame) friends as carefully as I choose my out of game ones

TLDR: Us eve players like our image of being nasty scary people.....this puts off a lot of people, not just women. We seem to like it that way.

Female avatar with the portrait zoomed out to show their breasts, which are as large, high, and wide (makes them look bigger) as possible = male player, almost certainly.

YOu want more ladies in this game, then you men need to act more like men, and not teens.

"**** or GTFO" and" GIRL=Guy In Real Life" is off-putting.

I'd rather gender not even be an issue in EVE, but...it is.

7.2 CAN I AVOID PVP COMPLETELY? No; there are no systems or locations in New Eden where PvP may be completely avoided. --Eve New Player Guide

When I first started eve, I found it unlikely that I would stick with it long. I was mainly looking for an escape from my other games I was bored of. Never imagined I would fall in love with it. I was lucky to find (or rather be found) a pretty decent group of people to fly with early on. There was a little weirdness the first time I got in voice comms (omg girl!) but it quickly passed for the most part. I've gotten harassed a few times but I can generally brush it off. I can and do bite back on occasion of I have to as well. Which is generally pretty entertaining for all the guys not under my verbal guns.

All I can say is that I'm am happy I found the game. And too be honest, I kind of like being in the very pronounced minority. I see it as both a challenge and an opportunity.

It's an issue everywhere, but so is your skin tone, hair color, and choice of body-wash. People discriminate. People judge. People speak ill of that which they don't understand or like.

Fortunately none of those things constitutes violence against anyone and if somebody does take it that far then they've already completely stepped out of EVE ONLINE - A VIDEO GAME, world.

If I were to go down to the local girls hangout (whatever that is, I won't stereotype) and bemoan the fact that most of the women were making crass jokes about men then I would be quite accurately described as being upset over something silly and natural. If there was something about that place which drew me in anyhow, then I assume my skin would thicken or that the atmosphere would change to adjust for this new-found heterogeneity.

EVE is a boys club because when it comes to women, CCP just can't seem to tap that (pun possibly intended) market.

Mind if I ask why?

it's a business case.

Any MMO wants the most clients possible for revenue. As such, they want client numbers that reflect their target demographics.

E.g. if MMO gamers are split among 50/50 ratios, a game showing 75/25 split towards men means they are losing a quarter of their potential sales.

If you're selling a product, you don't want to be excluding any potential customers, this is why CCP offers so many options to pay for your subscription, for example.

Female gamers are closing in on being nearly half of all gamers these days. I can get you actual stats and studies on that if you want, by the way. Yet EVE is losing out on a large chunk of potential sales, as seen by their user statistics.

Now, as to WHY. Well as others have said, we don't need pink ****, or fancy kitty ships. Its the community.

When people say that women are social/coop creatures, it doesn't mean we want to sit and gossip with each other over our periods in corp chat while the gang of ladies builds a kitty station. It means we want to come on coms without being harassed, and go on a fleet to blow up people.

We didn't pick up eve to build kittens, we came to blow people up. Our cooperative gameplay, is fleets and being logi-sisters. Women flock AWAY from eve because everytime they log on, or simply try to play the game (after getting through its own inherent problems) ignorant men come on and insult them, tell them they have no right to play, that they don't belong here, **** or gtfo, and a thousand other shaming tactics to get them to leave, or to earn internet props from their fellow slack jawed misogynists.

It is why we hop corps so often, or hide away in the WGoE. A vocal part of the Eve community, as demonstrated by the CCP Mintchip welcome thread, and by the few comments in this thread already, HATE women. The larger, silent part, simply sit back and don't recognize the sexist language, or misogyny, or won't stand up to their shitbag friends about it.

It is sad, really.

I wonder if the number of women playing EVE is so low because of the number of times they get on voice chat and hear nothing but phallus jokes and requests for sandwiches?

Maybe that says more about your particular group within EVE than EVE players as a whole, because that doesn't happen with us.

Okay, let's get things straight first. As terrible as the EVE community can be it can never compare to what the World of Warcraft community has turned into so I'll not really accept that it's the community is the reason women don't play because more than enough of them seem quite fond of World of Warcraft.

It more than likely has to do with the niche "spaceships" thing, the lack of an avatar or a little of both.

Need more girl geeks, plz.
