Drone Subsystems - is it me or do they suck?

I have been looking into a T3 that uses drones as a primary weapon, but it has come to my attention that the drone synthesis projector for the legion and proteus are not very well designed,.

The Legion drone sub has an inferior drone hp bonus to many other ships, and it only has 3 turret hardpoints but 5 highslots. But the big issue is that is sacrifices a low slot for a mid ... on an armor tanking ship!

Then there's the sub for the proteus. it only has 74 mbit bw, and even if you get the 25 mbit with the augmented cap reservoir (which actually has nothing to do with capacitor unlike all other t3s) its still not enough bandwidth for a full wing of sentries or heavys. And of course it only allows 3 turrets hardpoints (4 if you use power core multiplier, but then you have 75 mbit.) and, of course, the bonuses are inferior in drone hp.

Please, enlighten me if it's even possible to have a good, drone focused t3, and show some fits ... if it's possible

The U.S. Navy has developed a railgun that can hit a target the size of a watermelon from about 200km away.  its probably around 8,000 years in the future, we can go faster then light, be immortal, teleport capital ships, communicate instantly, mine asteroids and make ships invisible, yet still our railguns can't even hit a massive spaceship over 100km....

What exactly are you looking for? Are you looking for a drone T3 on par with the Ishtar? It doesn't exist. But there are many drone fits for T3s which do what they're designed to very well. It all depends on what you intend to do with the fit.

I know that no mere t3 can match the god of drones. I plan on using it for ded plexes, anoms and ratting

Forget the Legion.

After playing with the options on a Proteus, I think you're probably better off using heavies than sentries, which pains me. The only consolation is that it can actually make use of blasters and a MWD. But if you're looking to make it into a super Ishtar, it doesn't work. At all.

I don't know about Legion but drone Proteus is one mean SOB. It's designed to be like mini-megathron. Ogres + blasters. You can easily achieve 700dps against battleships + great tank ( or speed & agility ) and it has no problems with killing smaller stuff also.
If you want to be safe then the best way to use it is to stay in safe range and let your drones reduce some of the incoming dps ( killing BC's, dessies and elite frigs ) and then move in and smash the battleships with blasters and ogres.
It can withstand a lot of punishment so I prefer to just charge at the red crosses and get on with itTwisted.

Works like a charm and is way more fun than Tengu or Sentar. Tested in all of serpentis/guristas lowsec plexes.

Just add Omni + navcom to mid's and your drones will have no problems hitting anything and they will be nearly twice as fast ( Proteus gets drone speed bonus ). Instead of omni you can always use a web if you like.

I'd love to see your fit. I have been playing around with a drone heavy proteus fit, but i can't decide the best way to get it configured.

the drone sub on the proteus is actually decent and people do use it.
the legion just sucks in general but the drone sub can be used on a 7 neut legion which is nice.

There is no Bob.

The most you can get with the proteus is 4 heavies, and thats with using both drone subs. And because of that you're giving up a lot. So yeah you can have a cruiser with a small fleet of heavies but it wont have much tank, gank, or tackle, or anything, really. Just get an Ishtar.

That's a Templar, an Amarr fighter used by carriers.

This is one of mine

[Proteus, Rogue Two]

Corelum C-Type Medium Armor Repairer
Shadow Serpentis Armor Explosive Hardener
Corelum C-Type Energized Adaptive Nano Membrane
Corelum C-Type Energized Adaptive Nano Membrane

I don't like sticking to one specific fit so I make small changes all the time. I prefer to omni tank but you can always switch to rat-specific hardners. You can loose the 1600 plate and switch it for another repper + Nanobot injector like this :

If you don't want to use faction magstabs and deadspace enams just loose the DLA to free some CPU and switch them to T2. Using deadspace reppers and mwd is a must ( c-types are cheap and sufficient ).

This fit is great for nullsec magnetometric sites. I just started using is yesterday in Syndicate and it works great. I suppose that it will be effective in guristas space also.
