Seeing several comments about Sony and pay to win for their free play games. I honestly don’t see it. I played EQ2 for years before it went F2P .. played it for several months after F2P. for a onetime $5 investment I opened up enough to get me all the way to top level and have as much fun as anyone else.

Sure there were some restrictions but they are not that rough and now they offer many ala cart options (like being able to unlock one legendary item and such without having to subscribe).

I actually am impressed by Sony’s move to free to play, by the model they use. I suspect they will be the driving force behind the Free2play evolution (now that may not be good as some other companies have not handled f2p as well)

Ya'll have a funny way of spelling "Mechwarrior Online" because that's what we're talking about here right?

PS1 was my first "mmo" I actually had no idea what WoW was when people would bash it on TS (this is like almost 10 years ago). Then I quit when they came out with BFR's, then I came back and got a BFR, then I quit then I came back 2 years ago then quit again. SOE realizes they made a mistake with BFR's and I have some faith nothing like that will happen again. But I'm pretty skeptical about the cash shop, they'll ruin it that way... maybe/probably.

Also, I think it's like WoT in that you have to pay to get 100% XP

But it has a specialized perpetual skill training program combined with extra XP for base captures ect. Which I like.

I won't ever play Dust though and am only interested in what it will do for EVE.

Just to make the distinctions more difficult: EVE Online and Battlefield 2 listed as major inspirations for Planetside 2

Smedley plays EVE Online regularly and frequently mentioned it as the major influence for the sandbox portion of PS2. Its influence is obvious in both PS2′s time-based, offline skill progression system and the desire to have a single shard server, even if Smedley said that they probably won’t be able to manage that until awhile after launch, when there are multiple planets. “We’re probably going to end up with [separate] servers,” he continued, “but we’re going to experiment with [single shard] internally to see what we can do with it.” It’s an interesting idea, and there’s a lot of great potential in having the meta-game played on a single shard. It’s easy to imagine the same type of large-scale territorial control schemes that pop up in EVE replicated in Planetside 2.

Pon Farr Memorial: once every 7 years, all the carebears in high-sec must PvP or they will be temp-banned.

This is what's interesting to me, as I've long sense realized this is what has pulled me back to EVE (the planning skills, perpetual training) again and again along with the prospect of WiS. If they do it right with a flexible cash shop I can see it replacing EVE eventually for me especially as it seems to be more and more clear WiS will never happen and is and always has been a carrot on a stick.

I will play PS2 I loved PS1 even tho sony screwed it royaly with BFR's I have a feeling they learn't their lesson. If the dev's on PS2 are to be believed the micro transactions are all cosmetic / side grade.

Dust beta already feels P2W all the of the Arum guns are far superior to the isk guns in stats. I haven't enjoyed 1 round of dust that I have played.

You must be playing a different dust beta than I then, there are hardly much difference in stats between aurum and isk guns of the same category.

As an Eve lover there is only really one option. I want large scale, persistence and fights that matter, where teamwork and coordination can beat numbers. I will of course only be playing Planetside 2. Also I don't own a console.

So essentially its a game composed of random PS3 players who don't care about eve, with a few eve players battling over small, instanced maps for things which will have little to no significance in eve. (hopefully).

Or a game with its own social system, battling over a huge world with direct consequences for themselves. With its own bittervet community. Yes both games will have a lot of zerg but it seems planetside will cater better to alliance (outfit play) as it isn't fixed numbers.

I'd prefer if planetside was a subscription model, but I guess that doesn't yield enough players anymore. I do like the idea of the shared ISK in Dust and that side of things, and I'm disappointed about the increase in pace of planetside but its still a clear winner.

The proper term is “zergers”. Blink

ahhh, pre-nerf plasma thumper. how i miss you. RIP :'( got grenadier plat with that.

oh, and, yeah. i'm def. playing PS2 over dust. especially when they add the 4th empire back in, because i'm terrible with a controller.

oh, and, TR/VS ftw. **** the NoobieCons. even if they have my reaver now.

The future of both games will be interesting, but personally I don't believe Dust514 will reach it's full potential until it is on the PC. It also appears that Sony/Smedley is looking at EVE for some direction as to where PlanetSide 2 is headed into the future.

“The long term goal,” said Smed, “is to have environment that is destructible.” If players wreck a base totally, they will have to rebuild it before it can be useful again. He also alluded to EVE Online’s outside-in approach in that they started with space and have since created on- planet game play while their plans are inside-out, with plans for space game play in the future.

Nex (Cash Shop) / Aurum - removing sand from the sandbox since Incarna. Currently the only use for aurum is to buy virtual items in the in-game store, but Cockerill expects to expand its uses in the future.

Says the fool playing Eve online.

PS2 has so much more going for it than any game CCP can dream up. MMOFPS that has battles going on 24/7, or if you want to infiltrate a lone base, you can do that to. It's going to have weather and day/night, blah blah... I really don't see Dust being that big of a deal, ESPECIALLY because it's on the kiddie consoles.

Real gamers use PCs.

That's the one I'm actually interested in, aside from Dust.

I don't have any desire to play PS2, really looking forward to mechwarrior online though. Game looks like it may be pretty slick. The new PC gamer had an article talking about it and they were going on about how getting bounced around inside the cockpit is inteded to be a tactical effect.

Shake the pilot around inside the mech and he's going to have a tough time aiming anything.

And besides, it's mechwarrior! Loved those games.

Real gamers game, they don't pretend like one system is better then the other, but the vast magority of them do it on a console; which is the way it's always been.

If I remember correctly the subscription is worked in as optional (100% training speed) I think it will be like 5ish dollars. I think one positive with this model is that if you want to take a break you don't have to completely halt your skill training... or even be locked out of the game. The training for Spec Ops V or whatever will keep going only slower. The skills are supposed to be highly specialized apparently to so that's another thing from EVE (no soldiers will be exactly the same).

I tried this last night, keyboard and mouse work fine on my ps3 in unreal tournament. Dust doesnt recognise either in the slightest. Then quit the game as I will never play it with a controller
