Sony Computer Entertainment’s next-generation video game system is reportedly code-named Orbis and is projected to be very powerful. But the new console, which is expected to be out in 2013, will not play currently available games and will lose compatibility with used games in general.

Just curious. Dust implications?

Does this mean there will be a port or DUST will be a PS4 exclusive?

You mean Dust 1028, right?

Fortunately, Dust 514 is not currently available. Big smile

And this has been talked so many times. CCP can just port Dust to PS4 and you download that for free just as for PS3.

Using Carbon technology with destructible environments.

Somebody in Shanghai will have to tell the build environment that the target is now a PS4. Nothing to see here, move along!

Makes sense.

So does that mean a crap looking game on a next gen platform then?

Dust = a few months away
PS3 = a few years away...

I dont see the relevance to the PS4 and dust

Not necessarily. If they have high detail models in Maya/3DS/Whatever they can export them with high details. If you watch the trailer from the fanfest you can see those high details. If it makes sense to do so for a game that is watched from 4m away is a different question.

But why do you care? It's a console FPS and as such pointless to start with.

The graphics will get upgraded too, the same as EVE.

Just curious about how Sony are going to FUBAR EVE to be honest.

And yes, it's a console FPS and I'll never get to play it.

Nothing against consoles, but my kids play consoles.

It definitely implies Sony doesn't learn from past mistakes. Anybody surprised?

Rumor has it that the Orbis (PS4) wont be backwards compatible anyways so you wont be able to play Dust on it since its a PS3 game, so unless CCP make a new Dust with a new engine to up the graphics and the rumor is true. pointless discussion.

Dust will be future proof. It's digitally distributed on the PSN for free. They will upgrade it to PS4.

Do a little ******* research before posting the exact same thing everyone else posts.

Confirming that this guy hasnt a breeze on how coding games works.

"PS4 is out? well thats ok lets just press this button that will magically upgrade the Dust game to better graphics and mechanics, rather than spending months or years designing the new graphics engine that would be needed."

Oh wait...

Unless he means that the same graphics will be used and it just used on the PS4, in which case i retract my highly sarcastic response.

I don't know why you expect people on the forums to be reasonable and use their intelligence and do due diligence.

Oh I'm sorry, I though we were talking about the one game company that took a 2003 game and upgraded it constantly to 2012 standards.

You're misunderstanding game development. Today's consoles are far more similar to a classic PC than they were back in the days (e.g. NES/SNES). Once the PS4 is out, all they have to do is switch some toggles, do some minor adjustments (in case stuff changes or they did some things in a non-portable way) and they're ready to go. Ever wondered how games like Skyrim are released on PC, Xbox360 and PS3? No, they don't develop three different games looking the same and playing the same. They're the same game ported to the other platform(s). Depending on your base (e.g. the engine) this can be as much as just switching a toggle or doing some more adjustments (as mentioned above).

So far: Don't worry, especially considering the game is going to be completely free to play. They'd be dumb hyping a game with such potential and then dropping it after only 1 or 2 years with no replacement just due to a new console.

Also, lacking backwards compatibility is something not really new to console stuff either. It's been the standard back in the days when consoles used cartridges, with some exceptions due to special adapters being released (e.g. Nintendo's Super GameBoy for the SNES).
