Hi, I've recently picked up playing EVE and I love it. However, how do I trade ships? Like, one of my friends is going to give me a Retriever, but from what I've heard, it hs to be packed up and put in cargo to trade, and I don't have anything with nearly that high storage.

He can contract it to you in a station and you can pick it up there.
He can direct trade it to you if you are both in station.
You only use cargo container (jetcan) if you are both in space and need to trade something small.

To initiate a direct trade be docked in the same station.

Right click your friends portrait in the guests tab in station select trade.

The trade window pops up.

You can figure it out from there.

Or click the contracts tab select item exchange, and select private then enter your friends name. Make sure you get that part right or some one else may get your stuffs.

You can trade a ship:
* Private "Item Exchange" contracts. You have up to 2 weeks to pick-up the ship.
* In-station trade window (right-click on portrait in chat or in station guest list and select "Trade"). DO NOT use for trades with anybody you don't trust 100% (easy to exploit).
* In space, by boarding a pilot-less ship (other pilot ejected).
* If same corp, boarding a ship from a ship maintenance array (POS, Orca, carrier, etc.) that both have "Other" QUERY and TAKE access to.
* If same corp, moving the ship to / from a corporate hangar division that both have QUERY and TAKE access to.

If by trade you mean "Transported from one station to another"
Then yes, most likely he'll have to repackage and haul.
Orcas however can transport an assembled ship.
Ships that are assembled can also be sent via courier contract.
Likely the only ships cable of moving a large ship are going to be freighters.
Note that you cannot directly move a ship into a freighter for some unfanthomable reason.
You have to send it by courier.

There is a fine line between a post and a signature.

You can either use contracts or you can meet him in person in the same station and open a trade window by right clicking him.
