Probing Problems

The other day I was trying to scan down a Magnetometric site in HI sec 5.0 and was unable to obtain 100% signature, but only 40% signature. First I was using only 5 probes then went to 7, one in the middle, 4 on the sides, one above, and one on the bottom. I had just scanned down a radar site with no problem in the same system. My ship fit is probe launcher T1 with core scan probes T1. I have no implants or mods on the ship. My skills are Astrometrics 5, Astrometric Rangefinding 3, Astrometric Pinpointing 2, Astrometric Acquisition 2. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Some mag and grav sites, even in high sec, are very difficult to find. I wouldn't bother with those till you fly a T2 covops frig with scan bonuses, grav rigs, great skills and whatnot,

There is no point in using more than 5 probes when you have loced down the site. Only the 5 with best 'ping' will count.
In my scanner frig with Gravity Capacitor Upgrade rigs etc and all skills L4 occasionally there are sites in highsec I cannot probe down 100%. Move along to better pastures.

They changed the maximum probes taken into account months ago last year June (when they made unprobable ships probable). Now all probes are taken into account, so the more the better.

All probes can now contribute to a scan result, as opposed to the previous limit of four.

Check your probe strength under your Fittings window:

Before this (with that patch they halfed all the site's signal strengths), it was possible to scan down any cosmic signature with about 70 or 80 signal strength and four probes. It was hard and took a while, but it was possible and depended a lot on your technique.

Don't worry, scanning is one of those things that you can only get better at with experience Big smile

It sounds like you just need to practice more. As St Mio pointed out, probing really does come down to experience, there's no substitute for practice.

I would suggest dedicating yourself to spending a few days or a week just practicing and practicing probing, and as you're probing, think about why the stuff you're probing is acting like it is. Remember what you're actually doing (pretty much triangulating something in space with the probes) and think about how to make it work.

It pays off. For instance, by now I can look at a split sig, where two red dots are showing, and guess with 95% accuracy which one is the real one, simply because of my experience and thinking through the situation.

Hello Erik da'Red,

I would suggest that you have a watch at the official scanning video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=heYfTA00Idg

This will help you out a lot with scanning and it takes you step-by-step. Also as others have suggested some sites are difficult to scan down and require better equipment than T1.

I hope this answered your question.

If you have any questions don't hesitate to contact me In-Game by mail :)
