I had advertised myself on the recruitment forums as an interdictor pilot.

I was mailed in-game by Goonswarm Federation.

After providing them with my full API, they asked for a 500 million ISK down payment as anti-spy/awox measures.

I researched the forums about Goonswarm scamming activity, it was on Code Red.

I said goodbye, fly safe o/

DId I just escape a massive scam?

OP was disappointing - would not read again.

Much better ending would have been "So, to prove just how trustworthy I really was, I sent them 1b and am now waiting for a reply."

Totally a scam, you should never have to pay more than 450 mil for recruitment. What kind of business are they running?

It says clearly on their own website that anyone asking for money to join Goonswarm is scamming you.

Yes, its the Goonswarm recruitment scam. Unlike other people, you actual did the research before blindly giving them your isk. I guess EVE does have some smart players after all.
