Podcaster & Blogger Panel at FanFest (EVE Journalism)

We all know that COMMUNITY is an integral part of EVE Online. So much activity for EVE happens outside of the actual game, between news sites, podcasts, blogs, guides, community discussion forums, and the like.

That being said, it is my opinion that it would be helpful & entertaining for the fans of EVE to have a panel of podcasters and bloggers at FanFest. This could be used to discuss various topics and result in some amazing collaboration between media outlets. Here's some things that could come from this:

*Discussions on the present and future of EVE journalism

*Impact of EVE journalism on the community and on the gaming genre altogether (because we all know EVE podcasters and bloggers are light years ahead of other game journalists...no pun intended hehe)

*Q&As on how to get into EVE journalism, improve the quality of the produced media, and dissemination of information

*Ideas on how to integrate EVE journalism into the game

*Collaboration between EVE journalists and CCP, and greater accessibility

*Videography techniques, Voice Acting/VO work, broadcasting techniques, etc

*Workshops, MeetUps, equipment/software, etc

Many EVE journalists have expressed this idea over the years, but it would be nice to see an actual plan in place by CCP to work the EVE journalists into the FanFest schedule. We are a big part of spreading the word of EVE and now DUST 514, and can be an even bigger asset to CCP if we can better disseminate information via better access, collaboration, and higher quality production.

Before presenting this in the Assembly Hall, I wanted to get some feedback and see if this would be something you, the community, would like to see.

I thank you for your constructive feedback and (hopefully) support!

[Note: I did a search both on the forums and Google to see if this had been brought up before, but didn't find anything that fit. If I'm wrong, I apologize for necro-ing an old topic]

EVE journalism is a joke.

It's more a form of tabloid sensationalism with distinct opinionated news than any objective source for news worthiness.

So whilst that can be amusing as a source of entertainment, I would not want to give them any furher access to limited information or capabilities that any other player would have available to them especially not until they learn to grow up and it isn't a significant meta tool.

Jade and I over at Lost in EVE podcast want to take this a step further.

I'll state this here and now.

We want the podcasters to be the ones doing the interviews and the hosts for content that happens in between the main video feeds. Of course, we would want ourselves to be the primary hosts for fanfest 2013!! Big smileBig smile While that would be super fun, we realize there are many great podcasters out there, radio hosts, and even bloggers who could easily transition from written to spoken word and together we would instantly inject a massive load of community viewpoints to the video feeds.

CCP Guard and CCP Sunset did most of this for Fanfest 2012 and did a fantastic job but as a celebration of 10 years of EVE we think this would be a great way to allow the community to be even a greater part of the festivities.

Of course, as part of this we would also support a panel or a round table.

Oddly enough I am writing a blog about this and it should be out in a day or so (yes, shamless plug... http://eveallnight.blogspot.com ).

We are at a changing point in this game. History is happening now!

Hey Rundle. Welcome to the podcasting community. Ya'll are doing a great job over there. Thanks for breaking the 8 hour megasode into smaller hunks...some of us needed bathroom breaks during that marathon :)

While seeing the EVE journalism community run the hosting functions for FanFest would be a great target, I don't see that happening in the near future; namely for two reasons

(1) I don't see CCP giving up its hosting duties. To them, that'd be like handing the lion the whip and having them run the circus.

(2) Grumpy up there, while being trolly, did key on one thing; sensationalist. While it is good for show, most of the EVE journalism community is a bit too 'immature' in the reporting field; I don't mean emotionally, I mean experience-wise.

I could see *limited* interaction with hosting; spotlights, 'man on the street' interviews, co-hosting gigs, but not the primary hosts. Hell, even a bit of MC duty at panels would be a neat treat

This, however, may be a 'down the road' eventuality. What would need to happen first is recognition as a driving force within the community's news and media dissemination machine, and inclusion as part of the actual FanFest program. As a sandbox game, people have their fun performing different roles within New Eden; some build stuff, others blow up the stuff someone built, and some write blogs, make battlevids, or podcast the news and generate community interaction. Gotta love the sandbox Pirate
Speaking on camera for those who have never done it before can be quite a daunting thing. Simple things like knowing where to look, what to do with your hands (Ricky Bobby!), and the fact that one no longer has the ability to edit (lets play 'count the ums!') limits the field on who can actually perform those duties. Also, some of us in the podcasting field like to use colorful language. We can't have any **** Cheney moments on EVE TV if we want to do something professionally Big smile

As for 'objective journalism', there's no such thing, Grumpy. If you're waiting for an objective news outlet, whether in game or real life, you're going to be a sorely disappointed individual :( EVERYONE has an opinion, and while they may not allow that to take over their platform, it certainly will color their effectiveness or angle on anything they do. A successful journalist is one who can keep that in check enough to eloquently disseminate that information so that all sides of a story are told, and thus keep away from (as you said) tabloid status as much as possible.

Seriously though, and back on track; Rundle, I know you and Jade have talked about it, and I think that the first step is at least a panel at FanFest & access for the EVE journalism community en masse AT FanFest to the CCP folks so that we can get across our needs and outlook, and a formal, collaborative discussion with both CCP and the players of EVE who frequent our sites, shows, blogs, what have you. Maybe we (the podcasters and bloggers) need to have our own online symposium to discuss how we can all collaborate.

Lets get this show started. I'm curious if more bloggers and podcasters would like to see this become a reality, and if the community would want to see this as a part of FanFest, as well. Big smile

TBH they need to learn to spell. Perhaps when some of them reach the ripe old age of 12?

Honestly, learn to proof read stuff. EN24 is awful sometimes.

Just because the spellchecker worked doesn't mean it makes any sense dude.

Well, I'm the type who is not going to predetermine the outcome before I even ask them. I would prefer they give me that answer.

In fact, the answer "No" is just a starting point for negotiation.

I'll just mark you down as a "Thanks, but no thanks, not this year." Lol

Thanks for listening!

I guess that's one way to read the discussion. What I'm really saying is that it'd be nice to get the door open and see the ability to actually be successful before placing a shoulder up against the doorframe and pushing, and finding resistance.

As I stated (and you quoted), I'd love to see it happen, but again...some steps need to happen first to see if its even possible, agreed? One foot in front of the other, and all that.

Furthermore, it'd be nice to see more community folks (other podcasters, etc) get involved in this. Collaboration is key.

Yes, I took it more as a "nice idea but here is why it won't happen (including reasons, etc)" versus "a very lofty goal, will be hard to get there but how can I help?" I'm sure I'm no different than anyone else in that I'm more interested in working with people who are going to help find ways to make it happen and not with people who are going to tell me why it won't happen.

However, if collaboration is what you are really offering then I will be the first to accept it. Big smile

Honestly, I think shooting for the stars on this one might get us farther than you expect. Every CCP employee from Helmar and David Reid on down has talked about the EVE community, the uniqueness of our universe and how WE WRITE THE STORY. Had the post fanfest fallout not occurred then there might not be the same hesitation and aura of caution. I for one am moving on and looking to tap back into the energy of the community and of CCP in a way that supports David Reid's vision of EVE being the world's largest gaming universe.

So one of the first steps is to get all the bloggers, podcasters, radio people, etc. to come here and chime in. And even try to get some of the CCP people here to start working on all this. I'm not looking to turn this into a pissing match about who's ideas are better. Just want the community people to come together (as you do as well). Then we can start working with CCP on how we can help.

I'm tweeting now!

-1 Eve jouranlists having access to anything that isn't considered player public domain information.

By their own testimony above their have stated an inability to avoid opinionated news reporting and as such would be a further promoted meta tool.

There is no such thing as Eve journalism, only Eve opinion pieces. It impossible for Eve-Online players to gather and report on facts in an unbiased manner. The best you'll ever get out of players in this game is Fox News in space.

You asked me once, what was in Room 101. I told you that you knew the answer already. Everyone knows it. The thing that is in Room 101 is the worst thing in the world.

Rundle: Sounds good man, I'll be in touch. There's lots of resources out there, if we can get a dedicated group to pool them, then we're better situated to get where we want to be.

Venus: I'll state again; find me ANYONE on the EARTH who is 'unbiased', and I'll show you their gravestone...because they're not breathing. That's not saying that we can't be OBJECTIVE. The first step for anyone to overcome an overly-biased position is to realize the potential for there to BE bias. Once that step is taken, then someone who desires to be objective.

Objective: based on fact

Subjective: based on opinion

There's always a bit of subjectivity to a conversation between two human beings; its unavoidable unless you're dealing in pure fact (2-1=1, or something like that). So, to say that "by [our] own testimony we have an inability to avoid opinionated views" you are correct, but your attempt to turn that from an objective fact to a subjective negative is biased in itself.

Show us on the dolly where the bad blogger hurt you? Ugh

Anyway, this is a symantic debate.

Back on track: Rundle, if I came across as an arse to you, was not my intention; typed/written word being unable to clearly convey emotion and tone. I do hope we can collaborate!

I first heard this suggestion on the LiE podcast and I think it's a great one. I would love to see more of the better podcasters do some of the work at the next FF. That said, CCP/EveTV and their peeps would be loathe to hand over the main duties, and I support them in that as generally they do a wonderful job. I think Aradus Gunnell had it right; a better job for the podcasters of Eve would be to support the main functions of CCP and EveTV by doing "man on the street" interviews, special segments, co-hosting segments, etc. I really hope CCP takes some of the suggestions int his thread into consideration.

Hey folks....

Some things are progressing for sure.

I've started a crowd sourcing / idea mining project: EVE: How can we help?

Here we can work on the following question: How can we, as EVE Online players, help CCP market this game to attract and retain new players? No idea is a bad one!

Looking forward to the ideas!

Also, for those wondering, I actually asked Guard about hosting. Lost in Conversation Episode 11. You can listen in at 37:30 (but I hope you listen to the whole thing).
