EVE journalism is a joke.

It's more a form of tabloid sensationalism with distinct opinionated news than any objective source for news worthiness.

So whilst that can be amusing as a source of entertainment, I would not want to give them any furher access to limited information or capabilities that any other player would have available to them especially not until they learn to grow up and it isn't a significant meta tool.

Hey Rundle. Welcome to the podcasting community. Ya'll are doing a great job over there. Thanks for breaking the 8 hour megasode into smaller hunks...some of us needed bathroom breaks during that marathon :)


While seeing the EVE journalism community run the hosting functions for FanFest would be a great target, I don't see that happening in the near future; namely for two reasons

(1) I don't see CCP giving up its hosting duties. To them, that'd be like handing the lion the whip and having them run the circus.

(2) Grumpy up there, while being trolly, did key on one thing; sensationalist. While it is good for show, most of the EVE journalism community is a bit too 'immature' in the reporting field; I don't mean emotionally, I mean experience-wise.

I could see *limited* interaction with hosting; spotlights, 'man on the street' interviews, co-hosting gigs, but not the primary hosts. Hell, even a bit of MC duty at panels would be a neat treat

This, however, may be a 'down the road' eventuality. What would need to happen first is recognition as a driving force within the community's news and media dissemination machine, and inclusion as part of the actual FanFest program. As a sandbox game, people have their fun performing different roles within New Eden; some build stuff, others blow up the stuff someone built, and some write blogs, make battlevids, or podcast the news and generate community interaction. Gotta love the sandbox
Speaking on camera for those who have never done it before can be quite a daunting thing. Simple things like knowing where to look, what to do with your hands (Ricky Bobby!), and the fact that one no longer has the ability to edit (lets play 'count the ums!') limits the field on who can actually perform those duties. Also, some of us in the podcasting field like to use colorful language. We can't have any **** Cheney moments on EVE TV if we want to do something professionally

As for 'objective journalism', there's no such thing, Grumpy. If you're waiting for an objective news outlet, whether in game or real life, you're going to be a sorely disappointed individual :( EVERYONE has an opinion, and while they may not allow that to take over their platform, it certainly will color their effectiveness or angle on anything they do. A successful journalist is one who can keep that in check enough to eloquently disseminate that information so that all sides of a story are told, and thus keep away from (as you said) tabloid status as much as possible.

Seriously though, and back on track; Rundle, I know you and Jade have talked about it, and I think that the first step is at least a panel at FanFest & access for the EVE journalism community en masse AT FanFest to the CCP folks so that we can get across our needs and outlook, and a formal, collaborative discussion with both CCP and the players of EVE who frequent our sites, shows, blogs, what have you. Maybe we (the podcasters and bloggers) need to have our own online symposium to discuss how we can all collaborate.

Lets get this show started. I'm curious if more bloggers and podcasters would like to see this become a reality, and if the community would want to see this as a part of FanFest, as well.

Well, I'm the type who is not going to predetermine the outcome before I even ask them. I would prefer they give me that answer.

In fact, the answer "No" is just a starting point for negotiation.

I'll just mark you down as a "Thanks, but no thanks, not this year."

Never really considered EN24 news...more like...a bad middle school writing project

By their own testimony above their have stated an inability to avoid opinionated news reporting and as such would be a further promoted meta tool.

Rundle: Sounds good man, I'll be in touch. There's lots of resources out there, if we can get a dedicated group to pool them, then we're better situated to get where we want to be.


Venus: I'll state again; find me ANYONE on the EARTH who is 'unbiased', and I'll show you their gravestone...because they're not breathing. That's not saying that we can't be OBJECTIVE. The first step for anyone to overcome an overly-biased position is to realize the potential for there to BE bias. Once that step is taken, then someone who desires to be objective.

Objective: based on fact

Subjective: based on opinion

There's always a bit of subjectivity to a conversation between two human beings; its unavoidable unless you're dealing in pure fact (2-1=1, or something like that). So, to say that "by [our] own testimony we have an inability to avoid opinionated views" you are correct, but your attempt to turn that from an objective fact to a subjective negative is biased in itself.

Show us on the dolly where the bad blogger hurt you?

Anyway, this is a symantic debate.

Here we can work on the following question: How can we, as EVE Online players, help CCP market this game to attract and retain new players? No idea is a bad one!
