Hey guys,

My names James Audiotore from Gallente Federation.
I am a new player and began playing in the early hours of today. I have been looking around some websites and playing eve (i write this post while the servers are down) and i have alot of questions i would like to ask and hopefully receive some answers!

Question 1:
Is Eve worth the price? I checked the price and literally my mouth dropped. I pay for WoW and thats expensive but Eve? Holy crap. I understand why the price would be so much, the huge Galaxy's etc it must cost a bomb to keep the servers running and the free expansions thats a + sign. Im loving Eve up to now. I watched a video on another forum about Desert 527 (or something) and that looks absolutely amazing! So is Eve worth paying for? And what payment method do you recommend?

Question 2:
How much time will i need to spend to become a good Eve player? Is it possible to own like huge company's or an empire? Or something along those lines?

Question 3:
Who is John Roe? I've asked around and just been told hes a big bad guy in the Eve universe? And his bounty is like holy crap! I've not been given a full story, so would anyone be willing to tell me who he is and why hes so bad?

Question 4:
Last question, where would the best place to learn be? Like how to do everything? I searched Google a little for beginners guides and found nothing other than the first few missions which i completed with ease.

Conclusion:
I think ill grow to love Eve, i would like to be a good player and help out people (i do understand back-stabbing can occur here, but i will seek any back-stabbing out with a vengeance ;) ) So yeah that's about it, thanks in advance to anyone who answers my questions! Ill check back in 10-15 minutes! :)

Answer 1: You don't pay for expansions. If you factor those in EVE is actually cheaper (if you run one account).

Answer 2: You can be an empire, doing so with just one corp is not realistic right now. Technically you could do that if you manage to cover all timezones. If you want to take part in that game count 3 years in. A good EVE player is defined by understanding and willingness (to be ruthless) not by time spend in game.

Answer 3: John Roe is a bad man. Get near to him and you ship will explode.

Answer 4: The wiki*1 explains quite a few things. A better way would be to join a corp that has active activities and does so quite actively. Join the ruthless and mean if you want to experience the beauty of EVE.

Conclusion:
EVE is in it's nature a world of tribes. If you want to be the big peaceful democracy dude you will go the way of Xetic*2.

That BBCode bug is still not fixed? It's nearly a year now.

Asking eve players if eve is worth the buy... hmm. Let me guess.

Remember that eve is an mmo. I mean like really mmo, not like all the others where you can disregard the other players if you want to. You do not have that option in this game.

If you want to create an empire, there will be others too. Like say 350.000 active accounts many with 7 years experience.
Does this mean you should give up? No, of course not. But join an experienced corp and learn from them.

Remember the golden rules of eve:

1) Of course EVE is worth the money - I am posting on these forums, after all. Blink But as someone said, you do not pay for expansions. Ever. Just the subscription and you get all content there is.

2) Couple of months to be competent in the basics, a year or two to be actually good, a couple of years to be a good fleet commander or corporation leader or such, I'd say. This is a game that rewards long-term commitment. The upside is that after some time, your character's skills start to matter less than your skills and intellect as a player. This means people who have started at very different times can actually play meaningfully with each other (both as allies and as enemies).

It is possible to work with and lead huge corporations and stuff. Not "empires" as such, but I think for what you are asking player alliance of thousands of members would count? Note that all of these comprise of players. You cannot own a huge "NPC" corporation - if you want to do that kind of stuff, you do it with other players. Also, note that I say "possible". That does not mean "easy" comes even close to it.

3) No comments.

4) Wiki is a good place to start. Help channel and this forum can actually be helpful. Joining a player corporation and learning from them sooner rather than later is the best idea, though. Just make sure they are people who actually welcome rookies and are willing to teach. Avoid anyone who 1) attempts to charge you for joining (beyond possibly a corp tax), 2) tells you you have to mine X hours a week or stuff like that, 3) who give you excessive promises of Stuff(tm) if you just pretty pls join. 1 and 2 are just trying to abuse you. 3 are desperate for members and thus probably not helpful.

All this has been said before, but...

WoW and EVE are virtually identical in price. You do not pay for expansions. You pay $20 for the first month after trial and then $15 (less if you pay for multiple months).

I would warn you that EVE is not WoW in space. They are two exceedingly different games for a number of reasons...For example, you can (And will at some point) have players kill you and take the stuff that you had on you. EVE is a fantastic game if you approach it as its own game and not what you expect an MMO to be.

Depends exclusively on you. There's a guy in my corp who is barely more than a month old and extremely competent, and I've seen complete failures who have been playing for years.

The ingame bounty system is a relic of many, many years ago. EVE has been continually evolving since it launched in 2003, and the ingame bounty system sorta got left behind.

John Roe is not anyone of particular note that I can think of. Generally if you want someone dead you just find some mercs and hire them to do it.

that's because there's a lot of things you could be doing and no guide could possibly cover all of them. The ISK is a good reference tool.

Eve also has the unique property where if you make enough isk in game you can buy a Plex or ingame time card and essentially play for free. Another thing wow does not offer.

Also if you decide to stick around and end up loving eve as much as the rest of us you can purchase your badge into fanfest with isk.

And for a limited time only twenty plex can buy you a Nvidia GTX 560. Whata deal.

Eve scales. People who have little time to play can still get as good as an experience out of it as the people who play it all the time. It all comes down to what you do.

I will say yes you can run a corporation or alliance but two words of warning.
1. It will take a big time investment on your part to make it sucessful/worth while
2. That time in game will be spent mostly docked up co-ordinating peoples activities, once in a while you might get to fc(fleet command where you call the shots and ships get blown up). fun for some starkly boring for others.

If you want to learn about eve you need to identify the specific thing you want to learn about. Eve is like college. You dont just go to one class in college and learn everything its divided into schools. Law, Business, Journalism, Physics ,Sociology... you get the picture. So what do you want to learn about? PVP(small vs large gang?) Trading? Research & Development? PI? the list goes on.

Eve Univeristy as I have said many times is a good place to start.

And if you want to start pwning peoples faces in right away you can learn about PVP in Red vs Blue.

Or if in real life your fortunate enough to be a member of the something awful forrums or a Redditer you can join goonswarm or Test alliance please ignore respectively. They also tend to learn there nublets well.

1. yes, Eve is very much worth the price.
2. It can take a long time to get good. But that is good imo. If you became good at something very quickly, the game would get boring and you would move on. Regarding being the leader of a big corporation, I believe just last week, an alliance leader had a alliance wide meeting and I heard over 1,000 of his alliance members tuned in to listen to his speech. So yes, you can eventually be a bad ass on this game and have thousands of people follow your orders.
3. No idea
4. I would look over what Eve has to offer and decide what looks fun to you and then find a corporation that offers training for those activities to join. Do you want to mine minerals? Do you want to use minerals to invent and build spaceships to sell on the market? Do you want to be a day trader and buy low and sell high? Do you want to fly battleships and fly around in space blowing up your enemies? The choice is yours

I still sub to WoW and I can tell you yes EvE is worth the money. The game itself is cheap and the sub itself is the same price as WoW. Its great!

Staying subbed to WoW after starting EvE is a bit like going back to pre-school for a quick gloat after you finish your masters degree, might be fun to remind yourself what things used to be like but essentially not worth the cash because nobody there has the blindest idea what you're talking about these days anyway :/
