Is there one? Would anyone be so nice as to impart some knowledge concerning the matter?

There are a few vids on youtube about combat probing of varying quality (most are ****).
Best way to learn is to practice.

What you want to be doing is using D scan to narrow down the target's location and then moving your probes right on top of it.
Remember, if you don't get the target in 1 scan, it will likely escape.

Easy enough to practice on a corp mate or alt.

Basic stuff is, jump in, go to position with noone else on dscan, release all probes, send them into nirvana so noone will have them on directional EVER, then go find your target with dscan and probve it out in one cycle. Dont forget to hide your probes again.

I have a highly related question which has been bothering me for a while now: I am good at d-scanning down the ship Im after - getting a 5 (or 15) degree cone and a precise distance as well.

Great. This should do, right? Wrong! At least for me atm. Here is my problem: When I dscan/range down the ship, and finally 'know' where it is - getting the probes to that spot is sometimes very hard (for me). Lets say I know the ship is 12.5AU away, and within a 5 degree cone - I now have to place the probes there. To do that, I have to change the view and thus drop the 'cone'.

Ofc, Im not dumber than noting reference patterns/planets etc on my screen, so I can go back to that 5 degree cone - but it is still quite hard to get the probes right on that well defined spot because when I leave my 'scanning view' (rotating system to place probes), I... well... lose the preciseness I just had.

The above problem is only a real problem if the ship Im after is in a safe spot (ie not between celestials/warpables). I have tried to just stay in the same view, moving the probes so they are right in my 'cone', but then distance becomes a problem (it's hard moving those probes to the right distance from some views). Moving to the 'plane', to more easily move and direct probe distance 'loses' direction.

This is not always a problem - depending on where the ship is actually at. However sometimes, I really wished you could save the "cone" or maybe just a line in the direction where you were looking, graphically in the system, so you could leave that view to place your probes.

Or have I missed some function here? It is not the end of the world and I like the game to be challenging (and not dumbed down) - Im more concerned that maybe I am missing some function that is already there and Im not taking advantage of?

Have you tried dscanning within the solar system map (f10)?

Double-click into space, right onto the direction you were dscanning. You are now aligned towards the spot and should have less problems finding it again.

Also, it's a lot about measurement if you have the direction of your target. You have to guess the angle and then do some quick math in your head, how many AU your target is away from you, and how many AU it is above you. And the Solar System Map helps a lot

Can't remember the exact vid, sorry. But he does what your after: narrows down using D-Scan angle and range and then probes them out in one hit.

Also his wormhole vid is worth watching (about an hour long). Had me chuckling thinking you have to be organised in Eve just like you do in your RL job.
