I know standings are quite a common topic but I was wondering if someone could explain (or point to where its explained) how standings relate to each other. For example, I have an effective standing of about 7.5 with the Amarr Navy and yet my standing with the Amarr Empire is 0.26.

How do I have a greater effect on improving my standings with the empire? I've been doing level four missions for navy but this doesnt seem to have much effect on my standing with the Empire itself. Do I need to go to other member corps or what?

You receive a storyline mission once per 16 normal missions completed. That storyline increases your faction standings, and often gives a hefty increase to a corp also once completed.

Besides doing 16 regular missions to get a storyline mission for Faction standing increase, you can also complete missions for various Event Agents.

Corp standing has nothing to do with Faction standings.

You can only raise Faction standings by doing certain missions, most notably storyline,.
You can lower Faction standings just by shooting at things and killing said things gives you a nice big hit.

You raise Corp standings just by doing missions for that corp, but the only way lower these standings is to fail missions.

So you could raise your corp standings with, let say, all the Amarr corps and then go to do all the Minmatar ones. As long as your faction standing with Minmatar wasn't below -5 (so you're not KoS) then you could start to work on those corps.

If you never took any storyline missions or faction missions (these are the ones with someone else's ships) then you'd end up with fairly neutral faction, but good corp standings across the board.

There are other ways to lose corp standing. Attacking NPC convoy ships will get you bad standings with the NPC corp they work for. The same is true for attacking player ships in NPC corps. I'm not 100% sure but I think there are also some facets of faction warfare that can lead to negative NPC corp standings. Someone once told me that attacking stations will get a standings hit, but I don't know if that's true.

Ah, learn something new everyday !
Although to be honest i've never tried attacking convoy ships or stations before , makes sense though.
