Pulse v Beam Lasers

As you can tell I am relatively new and fly Amarr warships. So, what are the pros and cons of Pulse and Beam lasers. Which has the best DPS and puts out most damage?

Also, gatling vs normal?

Beams - Long Range, low Damage
Pulse - Short Ranged* , high damage

*Scorch crystals in T2 Pulse lasers make them long range, high damage.

The bigger the size of the guns (gatling is smallest), the lower the damage and shorter the range but the higher the tracking. So gatlings will hit small targets at close range but won't do much damage. Heavier guns will do more damage at longer range but struggle to hit smaller targets.

So pulse gats on a frigate or destroyer would be good?

Thanks for the replyBig smile

I run the my coercers with Dual Light Pulses. Slicers generally use Medium Pulse Lasers (the largest small laser). When you need the tracking or extra fitting room use gatlings.

Beam lasers are generally unused for most PVP. There are some exceptions with larger ships but for frigate sized pvp stick with pulses.

The thing is, more tracking is good on a frigate - but small guns already track a lot. Also, frigates sometimes have a tracking bonus on top of that. Add in a web or scram and suddenly the need for more tracking is lost in almost all situations.

This goes for all class of guns, which is why the more dps guns are used most of the time.

Not Flyinghotpocket's alt. At all.

Faction Warfare is like Fight Club. But with spaceships.

I find the range on pulse gatlings to be a little low so I never use them. I always go with Dual Light Pulses on anything Frigate/Destroyer sized , except for Slicers which need Medium Pulse Lasers.

Don't get too tied up in the whole argument that a certain ship must have a certain type of Laser fitted to it.

Focus on the facts.

Pulse-Higher DPS, Lower Volley, Shorter range and higher tracking

Beams- Lower DPS, Higher Volley, Longer Range and Lower Tracking.

Once you grasp this you can plan out what you want your ship to do, at what range you will be fighting in and what type of damage you want to put down.

You could build a lolfit beam slicer that does 110 dps @ 50 km. It'll pop if you sneeze too hard, but it's possible.

Beam lasors also use more powergrid and CPU compared to Pulses so beams give you less room for other modules on your ships.

Always fit pulse.
The only 2 ships in the game that should ever fit beams are the nightmare and the paladin which can both fit tachyons to good effect.

I can't really think of a situation where you use beam lasers.

Pulse with scorch has nice damage and range and in situations where your really need that long range you use Tachyons.

Whats the best ammo to use with these on a Punisher or should I be using lasers on a punisher?

I know that there is a school of thought out there that prefer to use projectile turrets on the punisher.

Discuss?

I am working towards a Harbinger as my cruiser and may load out my Coercer for missioning and rat hunts.

Usually, if you sneer at the ship bonuses, then there is a good reason. For example, maybe you are in a situation where your active tank sustainment is more important than your damage output, then projectiles can make a lot of sense.

In general I advise training skills that affect all ships over skills that are ship specific or limited use. Training artillery can be of limited use if you're flying amarr. Harbinger is a battlecruiser btw, not a cruiser. Use a BC for level 3s, a BC is just silly for 2s. If you're planning on using the harbinger for pvp, don't. If you're calling a harbinger your cruiser, then you need to spend more time in a cruiser so you can appreciate the difference.

One more thing.

Weighted lasers favour high damage and range against ROF and tracking. Hardest to fit. High load of capacitor. (Heavy, Mega, Medium and so on...)

Multiplied lasers favour high tracking and ROF against damage and range. Easiest to fit. Light load on capacitor. (Dual, Quad, Focused, Gatling etc..)

It knows what you think.

I have flown punishers with both autocannons and lasers. I prefer the laser versions to be honest. In a punisher its a safe bet that you will be slower than your opponent so they can easily pull range. With the range of lasers and scorch you can counter this somewhat.

If you want to know more about flying and fitting punishers for solo pvp I highly reccomend reading this blog:
