OK forum warriors does anyone know of a forum post or blog that fully explains Missiles and shields and how to use them effectively. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Those are two very different subjects. Missiles are a delayed-but-steady damage application method, while shields are one of two (or three) general forms of tanking.
