Turret icons

For the love of god, please bring these back:

This was the change that made me love looking through my items, now its just a cluster of turrets all looking the same, and I have to read all of them to find the correct one.

Why did you take this away? CryCryCry

No.

You see, I had the exact opposite experience.

Looking through the current (older) hand draw icons, I can actually tell the difference quite easily between turret types and especially turret sizes.

The rendered images (not icons) that CCP added were utterly useless in being anything but pretty. They didn't help you discern what the actual turret was in a visual sense.

CCP agreed with people like myself and reverted them.

Rememeber, icons are supposed to be iconic.

They didn't remove these, they simply reverted the change to the old icons that existed before the ones you linked. Because there was no easy way to tell the difference between different sizes of some turrets. Particularly, he Medium/Large laser turrets, and all projectile turrets (which all have near-black models with similar outlines). They were also extremely hard to distinguish when in the fitting interface. Hybrids had it easiest with those icons due to their bright appearance and distinctive shapes.

Also, those icons were far laggier than the old ones. Waiting 3-4 seconds for my items to load is not anyone's idea of fun.

They plan to introduce newer/better icons at some point, but they will likely not be simply renders of the turrets.

Should be optional then. Can't comment on other than hybrids, since I use those, but it takes me a lot longer to find the correct turret now. When you have loads of different meta lvl medium hybrids, some damaged, some not, it just takes too long to look (or rather read) through them all imo. Combined with the occational loot of other kinds of guns that have too similar icons it makes it even worse.

It's unfortunate that a shiny feature had to be given up for usability, but it had to be done. It's unlikely that it will be optional too, as it's the difference between rendering a picture to your screen and rendering a 3D model. Making a switchable option between those is a fair bit of developer effort that is hard to spare for a minor concern like this.

Too bad, I liked them and could tell the type and size fine.

I actually didn't have that much of an issue with them, either. The reasons I'm stating are the ones that were used at the time, and the ones that surfaced in the enormous amount of bitching on the forums about the new icons.

That reminds me: OP, you are a few months late.

Well to be honest it is kinda stupid to do an actual render of the turrets every time they are loaded. Coding-wise, you just do it once, save the images to a folder and then add a checkbox that directs the loading of icons to one or the other folder. I do a lot of programming, and I know this is one of the simplest of things to do.

Yeah, I'm a programmer too, and I share your sentiment.

However, this is the same CCP that deleted Boot.ini, doesn't have a proper working BBCode parser for the forum, and can't seem to figure out how to add a "switch character" button next to the "log off" one. The bar is pretty low.

Haha, nice, didn't know that. Well it looks like it was back in '07 that happened, and tbh, it says more about the OS than than CCP.
The switching of character is also a bit of a tricky one. They say that a lot of stuff has not been touched because of the code being made by wizards and sorcerers back in the day, so I would imaging it's as simple as handling of assets. Someone couldn't be arsed with cleaning up after himself when when coding, so it just a lot easier to simply quit the whole thing, and load assets all over again. Granted it's not very intelligent design, it does take a shitload of time to fix, and a buttload of time to redo.

I was pretty sure initially this was a troll post... sitting on the fence at the moment.

Btw turret icons now is to be able to tell one from the other. The failchange was to look at all the pretty colours so as to smoke less pot and fele like smoking moar (I think).

Yeah, the old stuff that's like running around blind in a minefield. POSes are another thing. Maybe they had hard time figuring out how to change the icons properly.

Like those billboards that for a while they had no idea where it even was in the code.

Why it is not optional?
