CCP launches investigation... - Updated!!!

Putting aside all the Eve Forum crap, there now a wider issue that CCP, their partners and investors have to consider.

Whether the guy was telling the truth about being suicidal (I hope he really isn't) is totally irrelevant. Even if the entire mail was faked it no longer matters.

Its the fact that here you have, The Mittani, the newly re-elected Chairman of a Council elected by the players of Eve, a auditorium of players and CCP employees at an official CCP event , all being filmed and broadcast live, getting drunk and joking about somebody being suicidal.

On top of that you then have the Mittani encouraging people to contact him.

At the moment in a lot of countries Cyber Bullying is very prevalent in the news due to a spate of young people being driven to suicide.

To many people outside of the Eve community this will just come across as a bunch of drunken idiots at an official gathering encouraging other people to mock and humiliate a person who could be suicidal, and then encouraging others to mock him further.

In a lot of countries you have many people constantly trying to blame computer games for many of societies problems, something like this is pure gold to them.

The last thing CCP, their Partners and Investors want is this type of publicity.

No way you swing it, it looks very very bad

Just on a side note, I have no axe to grind with the Goons or the Mittani, I have openly admitted on many posts that I voted for him and mostly likely would do so again.

As for as I am concerned everybody has a equal right to play Eve how ever they like so long as it is in the confines of the rules that are set out by CCP.

Unfortunately for CCP and us as players, what happened at fan fest has now reached outside of Eve (hopefully will go no further then a few on line gaming sites which in the grand scheme of things nobody cares about) and the last thing any company wants is to be associated with any kind Cyber Bulling.

I personally do not want him there because of that, and CCP should take appropriate action against him and other players who think the same way.

People who are mentally unstable probably shouldn't be playing Eve.

Heh... what do you care? As soon as Sony finishes consumating their marriage with CCP you're permabanned anyway. Big smile

Until that happens I will continue to post.

Besides, maybe after all this time SOE has forgiven me.

All it takes is for the guy to actually go through with suicide and then CCP would find themselves sued by the parents/siblings/wife/gf. Or the guy himself could actually sue for mental anguish caused. It's well known that people in the US sue for anything under the sun if they think they can cash in.
No matter if it was the alliance panel and not directly involving CCP, it was at a venue owned/rented by CCP and as such they would be responsible for whatever happens in it.

Not to mention the current CCP employee and former Goon that was described by the CSM chair as "high on Xanax and loaded as f***".

This poor soul is probably sulking in a corner in Reykjavik right now, haunted by nightmares of his past substance abuse problems while avoiding human contact, cowering in bitter shame of his story being brought out into the open.

CCP should at the very least offer the services of its legal department so that poor CCP Sreegs can properly litigate and seek compensation.

Is there thread you don't troll unless your an Orville ( I wish i could fly) to Mittani.

But serioiusly been playing this game for a long time and had my time on the forums as well seen a lot of banter which is fine, but there are some lines that should not be crossed in the the real or virtual worlds, cyber bullying being one of them. These forums have gone down hill with the trolling in recent times, its sad to see, this was a great community once.

Ppl say things hiding behind the anonyity of the web that they would never say to someone's face and think its OK, which really says allot more about the attacker than the victim.

Sad to see really.

I won't be responding to trolls so have fun (although I may make an exception for Lady Harlot Big smile )

Be afraid!

In America, there are politicians just looking for an excuse to sink their claws into MMOs and this would be one of them.

It's already possible to charge people for bullying on the internet. We are dealing with people who get paid a lot of money making a crises, and hence a reason for more government power, out of EVERYTHING.

There are good people trying to get the federal government out of the nanny business but we appear to be outnumbered.

But seriously. Mittani represents the majority of eve population, not just the goons. This is a lame attempt at abusing the system to override democracy. I guess its just the american way.

I play eve because its a game which has helped me get over my social anxieties, communicating with other people, and learning how to communicate with other people.

Without eve I wouldn't be where I am today, I am not fully better yet, I will probably never be, but the fact is that this game should not discriminate against ANYONE.

Pretty much every post I have read about this subject has been one childish remark after another.

I don't have a horse in this race and really couldn't care less how it turns out either way. If you aren't getting checks payed to you by CCP then I don't feel you should have a concern about how this turns out either since it doesn't really effect you. Asking for a ban is not your place and doing so just makes you look childish. CCP will handle this how they like and at the end of the day people no matter the outcome will act outraged.

On the other hand the kind of person that would tease someone that has expressed mental instability, be it a cry for help or just attention probably has their own insecurities they need to work out. I do not consider this acceptable behavior in real life or in a game. But all you have to do is play for a week before you notice that childish behavior and complete lack of morals is rewarded in this game so I don't know why everyone is acting like this is anything new.

Funny, that's the first thing i thought about Mittani when i saw him at fanfest. Guy seemed pretty manic. When he tried to rally everyone to drive someone to suicide it only confirmed my suspicion the guy has psychological problems.

I don't really care if your random EVE player tells someone else in a conversation to kill themselves - chances are that's not going to make any sort of difference. It doesn't even have anything to do with that person at all. The issue at stake here is that The Mittani (while not being a CCP employee himself) is a public face for CCP and EVE. As chairman of the CSM he's probably one of the most well-known figures connected to the game.

The situation is a bit tricky, to say the least. As a democratically elected representative of the player body CCP can't easily just remove him for fear of alienating a large portion of them. At the same time, the CSM serves at the will of CCP. It needs to be made clear that members of the CSM must conduct themselves appropriately in public when they are assuming their role as CSM members. This means no joking about suicide when doing a panel about EVE. I'm not saying the guy can't relax and joke around, but unfortunately it does mean that some political correctness must be maintained. Otherwise CCP and the CSM garner damage to their reputation, which is something we really don't need.
