Do you have a suggestion on how much seed money it would take to start station trading as a rookie?

It depends what you want to trade, etc (etc .. etc...)

But something quite fun which will give you a sense of how trade works:

- Remember all those items you were given free during your tutorials? What did you do with them? Odds are, you hit right click >> sell. You probably got a completely laughable price for them, as few to no people buy them.
Who does buy them? Usually, people using them for invention (Tech 2 production). Where do they grab these modules? Trade hubs. (EDIT: these need to be actual modules, not "civilian" modules)

In our case, you can turn a small profit by placing some buy orders for those items in your training systems, and let them get filled by players just selling what they consider junk.

Pop all those into a cargohold, and fly to your nearest trade hub. Hint: this is Jita for you.

Post some sell orders.

This won't make you rich, but it will show you how region trading works. You place buy orders where people quick-sell, and you place sell orders where people quick-buy.

From here, try to repeat the procedure for different items and regions. Try to keep the items small (salvage is a great one to use) so you can haul it without an industrial.

One example that works well is finding rat-specific salvage, placing buy orders in a mission hub and selling it in a slightly distant trade hub.

You can check market prices without flying all over space by using : http://eve-central.com/

Good luck :)
