How much can you actually see in 14 days?

I'm on day one of the trial. I'm reading through the career guide PDF and have explored the EVE activities tree which were posted here by other users. It seems like there is so much to do, how can one try 'all the things' in 2 weeks? Usually I can tell right away if a game is not worth a sub fee, but with EVE I don't even know if I will be able to ascertain which is my preferred career path in that time.

Is this normal, or do players usually figure it out pretty quickly?

You definitely can't try all the things in 2 weeks. Maybe not even in year. EVE is just so vast.

Hopefully after 2 weeks you will have got enough taste of EVE to know whether you want to pay for 30 more days or not.

Also your preferred career path can vary a lot during your stay in EVE as you learn more. I've been playing over year, and just recently I think I have now found my preferred path as trader.

Figuring it out is part of the adventure ^^

Don't try to do EVERYTHING cause a lot of people that have been playing for years still haven't done that. Try more to get a feel for how EVE itself works, not so much the individual activities. Your goal or career path will come to you eventually and naturally (at least for most people it does).

Also remember that there is no "career system" in EVE, your career is simply defined by what you do and what you describe it as. If you can do any combo of things too. I myself am built like 80-90% combat so that I can run missions quickly and 10% industrial so that I can make my own ammo without a lot of waste on minerals.

It's all up to you...

trial accounts have restrictions anyways... u cant get in mining barges or past cruisers... but there are so many mini proffessions in eve it would take a long time to try everything.
most people divide eve into a few sections

PVE
-highsec missiions
-incursions
PVP
-skirmish
-fleet fights
- wormhole
industry
mining
manufacturing
invention
trading
-station trading-
courier
-scamming

Thank you for the responses. I actually became seriously ill today and had to leave the game unattended, but while I was gone someone sent me a million ISK! So thank you, whoever you are!

I'm doing the military tutorials now, between resting and puking. From the guides posted in the new player areas, it looks like I won't be able to do much PvP other than Tackling or Militia/FW stuff. I guess it's better that way. Someone was also offering to do 1v1 Frigate duels outside the STI station but all I had was an Ibis. Probably should have taken them up anyway.

ISD looks like they do some cool activities I would like, but I assume even veteran players get passed over for such an honor.

I guess I will take the advice given and go for the organic approach, starting with combat. Plenty left to read as well.

Thanks again!

Don't stop with the Military (basic and advanced) tutorials, work with the other 3 tutorial agents as well. By the time they are all said and done, you'll have a decent chunk of ISK to spend, a few ships, including an industrial (that you won't be able to use until you purchase the game and subscribe, but hey, you'll have one somewhat ready to go) and just about all the skill books you'll need to get started.

Regarding the Ibis (which means you're Caldari), it's an OK starter ship, but the basic military tutorial will eventually upgrade that to a Merlin for you, which is a much better ship for running missions and PVP with. You will also eventually end up with a Bantam (miner) and Heron (E-War) by the time you complete your run of the tutorial agents. So, within a few hours, you'll have a pretty good spread of ships available to check all most of the activities that can be done in Eve.

You can see all wallet changes in Wallet Journal:
Wallet-button on left, then My Wallet -> Journal -> click Load-button. You can then use ">>>" to see earlier entries if any.

In this case it should say type: "Player Donation", description: "[r] malaire deposited cash into Magda Sinitianen's account". That [r] means that you get additional information if you move mouse over that text, in this case you get tooltip "Welcome to EVE :)" Big smile

1 mil ISK is just pennies for older players, but still somewhat significant sum for new players, so I like giving 1 mil to new players as a small token. It's also quite fast to earn back as new player if you somehow manage to lose it, as opposed to say 50 mil, which would take much longer for new player.

Note that a lot (and I daresay the most interesting) activities in Eve require teamwork, something you will not likely see as the vast majority of the corps will not accept a trial character.

And even the ones that can be done alone are a lot more interesting when done with a team (mining in High-Sec vs. mining in Low-Sec Twisted).....

You should be able to explore EVE a little further with a 21 day buddy invite. It will mean starting a new character, but 14 days of training on this current character isn't really going to be missed.

Send your real-world email to me in-game, I'll send you a 21 day buddy invite. If you end up subscribing, I'll send you the PLEX reward that I get for your subscription so you effectively get 51 days for free.

In the meantime, some resources to get you started on your exploration of this grand sandbox:

Im on my way, kind of juggling them as needed because some take a few hours, which is a bit weird. I guess if that's how the Manufacturing system works then it's an honest tutorial, though.

Then I should say, "Kiitti, Malaire, for the pennies!" (I'm not even suomalainen.)

Well, from the corporations' perspective, this makes sense. I wonder if STI is a place where I can still do group things during a trial, or if I don't have enough access to skills for it to be feasible.

I've been reading these, and anything else I can find for tips, like right now I'm keeping notes as suggested in "Your First Days in Space". If you wish, please make any other suggestions and I will study up! Thanks!

It took me 3 months JUST to figure out what was going on in any sense. I almost quit on several occasions. The great thing about this game is that EVERYONE is a newb in some respect (myself of course included). Even the guys who have been playing since beta... hell, I bet if you asked Entity or Cribba (a couple of 'famous' eve guys) they would come right out and tell you that there are still areas of the game they are 'nubbish' in... but it's really fun. When you do get really good at something you will have fun. Eventually, you may get bored of it... when that happens there's always a lot more. Big smile

Note that the cost of "purchasing" EVE is only slightly more than the cost of one month's subscription, and includes one month's subscription.

So really, you don't so much make a choice as to whether to buy EVE or not. You make a choice in any given month, whether you want to continue subscribing for one more month. Ignore the fact that the very first month's subscription costs something like 33% more (and also ignore the fact that you get a discount for multi-month subscription intervals).

Lol. And don´t forget to pay the 500m "goonies recruiting scam".

OP:

As above posters told you, do all of the tutorial missions, they give you a good view, what you can do in eve (and even more so). When joining a player corps make sure that not only you fit to this corp, but the corp you join also fits you.

When subscribing to eve after one month you will lose "rookie channel" instead you can join your NPC corps channel. Usually there are always some friendly ppl who will help out newbies, may be assistance in a mission, or helping out by giving advice.

Welcome to eve.

I love how i notice a lot of names ive seen in game well i am a really old toon so ya but word of advice being in a small corp is bad cause you get ppl like me who like to war deck the small ones and then being in a corp of 100ppl or more is bad as well because then you have to either join and alliance or be war decked by the high sec carebears who want to own the systems lol but ya have fun and i hope you enjoy eve. =]

u could ask an established player to send you a buddy link so u can get a 21 day trial....and if u subscribe and play for 30 days u also give that player 30 days free time.

i know of some players that did that.... they then gave the noobs 150mil to help them get started.

Thanks to everyone for the responses, I wanted to thank you sooner but I've been playing catch-up at work and my phone's ability to multi-quote is sadly lacking.

The trial is around day 4-ish. I've finished with 4 of the 5 career agent tutorials. When I complete Advanced Military, I'm kind of unsure where to go from there. Is that when I should find a corporation like Caldari Construction and use the agents to find me missions for them? From what I've read I guess certain companies are better at helping players develop certain careers.

Side Note A] Even though you can do a lot in this trial, so it seems, there are some intriguing options that you can't explore I guess. Market trading sounds lucrative, but you can't haul around large commodities. Though, there are probably so many established traders that it would be difficult to break into that line of work. Also, people have mentioned Planetary Interaction, but there's no tutorial for it that I could find. It sounded like it might be interesting.

Side Note B] I guess there is a lot of griefing in the game, as people mention it a lot. Thankfully, I'm used to that sort of thing from other games. Zergrush, Rez killing, exploits... All nature of the beast. Guess I will find out how bad it is here.

Side Note C] People mention High Sec vs Low Sec systems, I suppose this is a point of contention for some players. Do the Low Sec alliances keep newbie freelancers trapped in High Sec, or something? Just curious, since I won't experience this warfare directly during trial.

Anyway, thanks very much for the insight and advice.

Smile

My earlier answer about missioning after tutorials:
https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=35561#post35561

Some planetary interaction links I've collected: (I havn't actually done any PI so I don't have first hand experience on this.)
http://evref.com/?planetary-interaction

About trading:
You can do trading without any hauling. Station trading means buying and selling items on same station. You make buy order and when someone sells you item you make sell order from it.
