Thanks CCP Mort, your reply was camouflaged by troll packets.

When you blog, Could you please document the ports and traffic in a way that will let me set up tight global security while letting you do the good job that it sounds like your trying to do and open up eve as far as you need it to be, AND NO MORE.

I think a list of all files that need access as well as their requirements should be common knowledge and readily accessible even to the trolls and not just in reply to my petition. I haven't pinpointed the launcher yet but I forgot to look while I was chasing other ideas.

It crosses my mind, that by making precise information available , CCP would be showing concern for their customers in a general way. Lack of information encourages people to set their firewalls more lax. There is no reason for people to leave their machines so wide open. All kind of banking, social networks, phone and password data and their related accounts are buried on our machines. In real life, we really don't want a mystery ALT.

Yes Khan, Apple software IS spyware. You should blacklist all ports or IP's that lead to the recording industry DRM enforcement offices before they fine you for whistling a tune.

All firewalls (or even just the NAT translation to your box) will *by default* leave every single port on your machine ghosted to the outside world (out, coming in).

Your only threat *even without a firewall setup* is from malware on your system connecting *outwards* and in doing so opening up an inwards path. You literally do not know what you are doing.

In contrast, it is probably more likely your software solution is showing closed ports (rather than just absent) which in the least case at least shows there is a machine there rejecting connections.

Worst case scenario: You're safer using the Windows firewall than your solution
Best case scenario : no difference.

It's worth reading over at GRC.com.

There's a leak test on that site that is worth taking. I would bet a lot of money your setup would fail it.

thanks Khan forgot about GRC

to the GRC.COM Web Server.

If your computer is currently connected to the Internet, the most likely cause for LeakTest's inability to connect is an aggressive and properly working firewall. If so, it is preventing LeakTest from connecting to our web server's port number 80 (HTTP).

That's GREAT news! . . .

. . . but to be completely certain that your firewall deserves the credit for blocking this outbound connection attempt, you should try permitting LeakTest to connect just to be sure it can. If it still can't, then perhaps something has changed on our end and you'll need to grab an updated copy.

so much more work to do now that I opened it up. Last time I was at GRC I was kinda leaky but fixed it. Now I opened it up so I can play and can only hope I did it right the first time. doubt it.

You're not, LCpl. is the correct abbreviation, though plenty of people write it as Lcpl. as well.

You're both wrong.
Lance Corporal = LCpl
Staff Sergeant = SSgt
Captain = Capt
Colonel = Col

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand you reveal the troll.

Anyone who knows the importance (and reason it is tested for) of a leak test will know that a ping is harmless. That to actually make a connection requires local code to be listening to that port and, indeed, to be able to do something with data sent to it.

Thanks for playing though.

Perhaps not, but I've know a few Marines that appear to experience them.

Of course I knew it had originating code, The source was EVE. Kind of self evident since I posted on an eve forum asking them to stop???? I Doesn't show up as a ping on my logs but a scam. I mean scan, I allow echo requests so that servers don't time me out but the pings have to go where I expect them go. you can come in my front door port 80.

I really don't want to relearn everything I had to learn because of listening to others with your attitudes nor do I want to try to dig for worms and Trojans again. My box has been clean for years. If I have to open my system up to threats to play a game doesn't it make more sense to rid myself of the offending software that these scans are looking for? Why should I waste time on this stuff. Nobody pays me for my time when I' go down.

These are exactly the people you dont want with guns because they're going to inadvertently shoot some hapless traveler they believe is working for the government or some Colombian drug cartel... What any of those guys want with you..or you believe they want with you is beyond me.

Isn't paranoia a form of narcissism in most cases?

Also how often do you "go down?" lol I have most likley 1/10th of a wall up and can honestly say i've only got a virus etc into web based mail. Most attacks are now social engineer, so phising for some idiot rather than hunting.... From those mostly used to help create bot nets.

What people really want is your data from some other company not randomly attempting to sneak on to your computer and hopefully find some bank or CC info... Too random! Just go to the people that do have it for sure.

AND! if that is your worry why even keep that stuff on a computer connected to the internet?

They're coming to get my gun....ss Err porn!
