Are stealth ships viable/cheap?

I really like the idea of stealthy flying, but I haven't heard anything good about solo flying stealth ships for pvp purposes. SB are only good in fleets and against big targets and strat cruisers are way too expensive. Is it true that stealth ships are not that good for solo pvp purposes? Thanks in advance :)

Well, solo stealth ships have the disadvantage of not being able to engage as much, but they have the benefit of more control in target selection (Don't like your odds? Don't uncloak). It's up to you if that makes them desirable enough to you to fly them.

I've heard good things about cloaky recons for PVP, specifically the pilgrim. SB's can also be fun to fly. mxzf has the main point though, a stealth ship can always choose not to engage if it doesn't like the odds.

As mxzf said, the true strength of cloaking ships is being able to decide which targets you wish to engage and having the element of surprise. They don't have a lot of DPS and can't take a ton of damage, but that really does help balance the ships. We don't want Covert Cloaking Uber Pwnmobiles, after all. : >

That said, covert ops ships ARE useful in certain situations for solo PvP.

Bombers are useful against large targets (though for solo engagements you really need to know what you're doing and be really good at picking the right target).

Normal Covert Ops ships can be used in some situations. They're a threat to the Tier 3 battlecruisers, for example, like most frigates. However, they can't see the CovOps coming.

When my small corporation was war decced by a larger alliance, I used an Anathema quite a lot. I killed a lot of their newbie players mining in asteroid belts and I caught pods and whatnot as well. While not exactly a great feat, it worked and my aggressors lost quite a few members over this tactic. The cloak let me get into position, kill the target, and hide before help could arrive.

The Pilgrim is okay-ish for solo PvP against turret-based ships, IF you have time to kill your target; the DPS is pretty low. Low DPS = Target has time to call for help. But, if you're in the middle of nowhere and you're pretty sure that your target doesn't have any friends nearby, it's a viable option.

I frequently solo roam in a bomber. Your best targets are things like Tier 3 BCs, Sniper HACs, and close range fitted turret BCs. I'd avoid the Myrmidon solo though. Maybe. I tried to chase one down a couple days ago in Hagilur... Lol

A flight of light drones is all it takes to drive away or destroy a solo bomber, assuming it can't kill the ship with the drones very quickly.

A Pilgrim is awesome vs a Turret ship with an active tank and no nearby friends, you can see right there how huge your target selection is going to be ;)

Also, unless your operating in Wormholes or AFK cloaking for weeks, cloaks don't give much of a surprise factor due to Local Chat Intel.

I've traditionally had pretty good luck with killing things with the bomber before the drones really had much effect - though certainly I prefer Tier 3s!

Artillery fitted rapiers are good fun, you can solo any frigate sized ship and some others too (Dessys, Maybe some cruisers) due to OMGWTFBBQ web range, combine with a Dark Blood Disruptor for extra sexy.

And remember to pack them Warrior IIs.

EDIT, A fit, for your perusal;

[Rapier, Solo ]
Tracking Enhancer II
Gyrostabilizer II
Nanofiber Internal Structure II
Damage Control II

Stasis Webifier II
Federation Navy Stasis Webifier
Dark Blood Warp Disruptor
Experimental 10MN MicroWarpdrive I
Invulnerability Field II
Large Shield Extender II

650mm Artillery Cannon II, Republic Fleet EMP M
650mm Artillery Cannon II, Republic Fleet EMP M
650mm Artillery Cannon II, Republic Fleet EMP M
Covert Ops Cloaking Device II

Medium Core Defence Field Extender I
Medium Core Defence Field Extender I

Warrior II x4
Valkyrie II x2

129DPS From your guns, ~90 for drones.

Very fast (1797/2564ms) and maneuverable, remember to OH your point giving you 33k point range, the Fed Navy and TII webs will reach out to 56 and 40k respectively.

If you need to bail, web the **** out of them, over heat MWD and invul if needed, burn out of their tackle/lock range and cloak/warp.

Oh yeah 24k EHP, 26 on heat, not that it matters as you really shouldn't get hit anyhow.

Thanks for the replies, this gives me a bit to think about. I am glad to hear stealth ships are good for solo pvp! From reading this I think I will train for SB then go for recons.

I like flying around solo in a bomber every now and then. They're fairly cheap (50m fully fit at the rediculous Fountain prices, as opposed to 200ish for a Recon out here) and can kill people fairly efficiently. Industrials especially are nice targets with their low EHP, very VERY low scan res (so even if they're bait they'll take about half a minute if not longer to lock you) and slowness. Bonus for possible nice loot. Next on the list are ratters, pick your targets carefully and you can take on blinged-out faction battleships (such as Tachyon Nightmares) if you're lucky. If you decide to go into nullsec, be wary of bubbles although they generally go up after you've started killing some stuff rather than before.

Good luck!

The big advantage a bomber has over a recon is that recons have a lock delay after de-cloaking, as with all ships, with one exception, bombers, which can lock straight after de-cloak.

However I still love my 300mil isk pimped rapier :P

when you're going that path anyway, take the side track and train Transports as well. cloaky hauler is all but a must when you eventualy roam arround in a black-ops cloaky/cryo fleet.

SSV Normandy SR-1 and SR-2 are both frigates that can cloak and do pretty high dps.

Viable certain.

Cheap, not so much.

When you consider that block-ops gangs require a few billion in hulls to make them work.....well they aint cheap. But the the surprise buttsecks factor makes them worth it.
