Being fairly new and all I was wondering whether the use of 3rd part apps was against the rules of the game. For example I have seen an app called Aura for android which allows you to track your character, read mails, plan skills and use a database to look up items and skills etc. My question is whether or not this this against the rules of the game? Thanks in advance.

Allowed are:

- Any program that uses the API to monitor stuff (means read only, not altering) this includes programs like: EVEHQ, EVEMON, EVE fitting tool [EFT] and Aura.

Not allowed are (and could get you banned):

- Any program that does things in game for you. So any automation of running EVE without player interaction is not allowed. So programs that mine for you, programs that alter market orders for you, etc are not allowed.

So any program that alters stuff for you remotely, or runs EVE for you is blacklisted.
Best to do, do NOT alter anything in the client. The 4 tools I mentioned above are all clean and used widely by fellow pilots.

So for isntance if Aura added a feature to allow you to put things up on the market or put a skill in training that would be against the rules? But since Aura doesn't allow do that (as far as I can see) it's within the rules?

Correct.

And you're right, Aura only has read only ability. It reads all data you can import in it from the API and that is all.
Personally I use Aura too, just to check my skillqueue and if it is below 24h. For all other features I use EVEHQ on the laptop (testing ship fittings, make skill plans).

Confirming the above. API access is okay.

I use EVEmon, EFT, and Aura.

I also use the website http://eveboard.com/ which uses the API to make your character info public. Example: Me

For API access, you need to generate a Custom API Key (CAK). For apps I use a single key with full permissions; I never share this key with anyone or use it on websites. For websites I use a key with minimal permissions (most web sites will provide a recommended template of required permissions) that can only access a single character on the account.

Killmail sites like http://eve-kill.net/ need to be able to access your killmails, but you don't want them reading your mail or looking at your market transactions!

You can make several API keys, so you can make a new one for every website you use, or for every person you give a key to. You can also edit keys, or delete them.

To be precise any program that interacts with EVE via API calls only is allowed and anything else will get you banned.

I currently use Eve Fitting Tool, EVEmon and iClone on my iPhone.
None of those allow you to change anything in the game itself though, so should be allowed/safe.

Altering some data by 3rd party tools will be allowed soon™, when new API is launched... with Inferno expansion I suppose (april 22 or may 24).

I highly recommend Pyfa instead of EFT. Better interface, more portable, and updates much faster (since it is open source). The latter especially is important since CCP have gotten to proper iteration now.
