So, its there a way to turn these off until I actually click on a system, or prevent them from stalling the UI for 5-7 seconds while it gathers info?

I agree with you on this and have a post in the sugestion section of the forum in hopes of geting some TLC for the star map,

any one who would like to see some up grades to the ingame maps, please go and show your suport, hopefully the maps will see some attention in the neer future.
