One line I'd add for new players

"If you think in terms of I can't do X untill I have Y, you'll never do anything"
Specifically, even a 1 day old character can be usefull in PvP, just dive in

This is my third attempt at playing EVE. I played for a couple months in 2008, and then again in 2009. Everytime I play, I feel like I need to get going with a good ISK-making plan.

At first I tried mission running, but the monotony got the best of me, so I turned to mining which turned out to be even more boring. I then planned on working towards R&D but realized I needed ISK to get to where I wanted to be.

So I completely relate to your statement; I have been thinking in terms of X until I have Y, and as you say, I'm really doing nothing. I have like 6 million SP and not even 1 million ISK.

That said, what's the best way for me to "dive in" to PVP? That's ultimately what I want to do anyway, I'm just not sure where to even go to dive in.

Throw a few rifters into low sec (or incursus, tristan, punisher, or merlin)

Or maybe try one of the 1v1 frigate fight cans that you see in trade hubs like Amarr, Dodixie, Hek, or Rens.....just keep an eye out fro neutral RR hehe....

1. Try Red vs Blue
2. Then maybe Faction Wars
3. Then wardec and ransom a highsec corp for laughs
4. Plunder lowsec
5. Learn Russian and conquer all of 0.0

I got 65 M sp but I still sometimes roam in T1 frigates and get kills (and get killed). It can be done and lots of fun.

Perhaps I should just jump straight to this.

Thanks for the replies!

This thread is linked from the New Citizens Q&A Resources sticky (via the link to the EVElopedia), and I send the text of the OP to all new players that I bring to the game.

Perhaps I'll find the ISK to buy a login screen advert one day :)

I'd like to humbly add the Srs Bzns Podcast http://srspodcast.com - the podcast for new players.

We're producing again and happy to cover any topics that people request.

Bumpified.

Also, worth noting that you can explain 90% of the game to a Pen&Paper RPG player by saying "it uses the White Wolf skill system". Explains approximately 110% of skill-related questions in seven words.

The deterministic/random mix is basically Mage: the ascension as well.

We have a guy in the RP community who started up, hopped in a Rifter as soon as he could get in, got a little bit of fitting advice from a well known Assault Frigate pilot and got something like 5 solo kills in his first two days. You are never too young.

Poetic Stanziel has what I consider to be an awesome suggestion for new players: The Road to New Player Retention.

It's worth a read, regardless of whether you are a new player or bitter vet.

Great post and thread :) Glad to see everyone is helping each other out \o/

So I have added this to the EVE New Citizens Q&A Resources.

If you would like to see a specific thread up there please mail me In-Game with the thread and the reason why it should go up into the Sticky Resource Thread. Please note not everything will make it since some of it might be duplicate information and I would like to keep it as clean and easy as possible to read.

Don't forget to poke your friendly ISD:STAR members too with questions :)

I'll try to squeeze this one in the OP, but make sure you check out Shalestina Sulistaine's site for EVE newbies!

And it appears that I left out Red vs Blue.

And a note for players old and new alike: PvP is fun. Yes, it involves loss, but there are ever so many mechanisms in the game to help you control the level of loss. You might raise funds with your highly skilled hisec industrial alt, then PvP in frigates with your 10M SP alt. Frigate combat is fun, and you can afford to lose half a dozen to every cruiser you help kill. Learn to love your frigate :)

@AzualSkoll has blogged various articles relating to ship types & PvP, worth reading. For more advice on fitting ships for PvP, use the advanced search to filter articles from the Ships & Modules forum (and throw Liang Nuren in there for good measure).

The account name that you choose has absolutely no impact ingame. You will have three character slots to fill, it is only these character names that will be visible ingame.

Awesome thread guys. This needs to be stickied. I've been playing EVE for seven months and I learned stuff from this. Then again, maybe I'm just stupid.

Thanks a lot for this.

You know whats funny? Aside from these really great rules we all at some point ignored the golden rules and just made a blitz hoping for the best.

Why? Because risk vs reward and crazy **** in EvE makes the best stories.Big smile

That aside great thread!

What the pilot orientation video says is true; if you specialize you can do things just as good as the vets. Every skill tops out at 5 so every time you train one you've now equaled everyone else in the game who has ever trained that skill to 5.

You'll find that as you grow older and become a bit of a vet yourself you only gain in real skill, skill and knowledge that you only get from playing the game and doing things. If you stay relatively specialized from the beginning you'll actually top out within a couple years and any years after that would be spent cross training to other races or trying other things. Lots of older players can find themselves still not able to do anything as well as they want to because they spread too thin. 20 million or even 30 million SP isn't as much help when it's spread evenly amongst all the different categories when all you really do is combat.

That is to say, don't cut yourself off from trying new things, just keep in mind that "jack all trades, master of none" very much applies here.

You should invite some of these new guys to your channel so we can help them directly. [Smile
