I tried going in and out of character customization a few times and the problem replicated each time.

Usually clearing your cache fixes most of the character creator problems when you have stuff disappear. Give that a go and see if that works.

It's a rendering issue -- it's happened to me a couple of times as well. It usually clears up if I log out for a moment. You may, on occasion, also lose your torso (and I have, in one memorable instance, lost all of my avatar's clothes except for her vest).

I can't get rid of my darn signature!  Oh, wait....
