Scan Probes- How the heck do I use them?

I've read guides on them and everything... but I can't figure out the buttons to make them do anything.

Do I fly around and drop them or what? No matter what range I set them at, they won't fly around and tell me where anomalies are!

First off, Cosmic Anomalies can be found without using scanner probes, but Cosmic Anomalies require the probes.

Step 1: Fit Core Probe Launcher to ship
Step 2: Load the launcher with Core Scanner Probes in the same way you'd load ammo to your guns (at least 4 of these)
Step 3: When in space, click the module once per probe until you've launched as many as you want
Step 4: Open Scanner window (Ctrl+D), change to System Scanner tab
Step 5: Open Map (F10), make sure it's on system view and not universe view (can change this in World Control Panel dialog)

You will now see your probes on the system map, represented by a cube with 2 arrows on each axis, and a sphere indicating their range. Play around with dragging the arrows and edges of the spheres to manipulate the probes. Also, remember to right click everything, and try using Ctrl/Alt/Shift while clicking to do things like drag all the probes at once, or move them towards/apart from their midpoint, or resize all the probes at the same time.

Once you're happy with your arrangement, hit the Analyze button in the top left of your scanner window.

If you don't get any results, make sure your probes are covering at least one celestial, and that you don't have any filters set (the drop down box between probes list and results list).

Cosmic anomalies will always return 100% warpable results if your probe detects them.
Cosmic signatures will require you to move your probes closer while lowering their range to increase their strength.
If you're in a scanning ship that can't do combat, bookmark the site once you've gotten it to 100%, and return in combat ship.

You started in 2008 and can't figure out how probes work? Something is fishy here ....

Read the "Fart file" and you will understand the meaning of life !

Bought, Inherited by younger brother, inactive/dead.

With the character bazaar, you do get the odd wrinkles, especially since you can plex yourself ISK.

Highsec isn't "Safe".  Neither is it a playground for bullies and bottomfeeders. So stop complaining and start playing the game already.

Sounds like you haven't taken the elementary first step of doing the exploration tutorial.

Yeah, I started a long time ago, did the tutorials, forgot what the heck to do since I spent a lot of time inactive and never used probes in practice anyways.

So your best bet is to find your nearest career tutorial centre (other than the one you have already done) and run the exploration one again.

Those tutorials or even current probing mechanics didn't exist 2008 so yeah running those tutorials is a sound advice.

But quick and dirty:

launch probes
click the scanner info window
fiddle with probes and press scan.

Repeat until you find something.

Check the link in my signature, one of the guides talks about exploration and explains how to make probing work.
