In this case you are wrong. People will not start playing Eve if everyone who plays and the gaming media says it sucks. Massive amounts of pissed of players on both official and non-official forums, and website news talking about how a developer is ruining a game are the two best way to discourage new players from ever buying your game.

Not really. Given the rep EVE already has in the non EVE playing world, ppl that WANT to come to EVE read about stuff like this and it draws them here

I'm sorry... are you saying that random guy on the street who's totally wanted to play Eve Online but never has...
will, upon learning that the game company has put the game on life support... Will suddenly START playing Eve?

Really?

I mean... really?

I'd assume most negative press about a company essentially deciding to abandon their product to work on their new product... would get the average guy on the street to... follow me here... wait for the new product. Rather than shell out cash for that thing he's never been willing to shell out cash for before.

No?

I totally get folks wanting to play because of the totally sexy and cool Guiding Hand Social Club shenanigans, or some of the various other cool in-game things... but that's like saying CCP was flooded with new subs in the wake of the T20 debacle. Or when common guy on the street learned that CCP basically screwed things up royally by killing the boot.ini on their customer's machines... decided THAT was the company he suddenly wanted to invest his free time into.

The reason Eve boomed in 2008/2009 is because Eve was getting better. Many old players returned, and many others came to the game cause it has a good buzz. People were highly recommending the game to their friends, and it looked like the game was getting better all the time, even though it had issues even back then.

Currently, the game has a terrible buzz and looks like it is in massive decline/decay/stagnation. Who would want to invest the next six months, or even one or two years, of game time to get anywhere in a game that is slowly but surely dying. People do not play Eve for Spacebook or poorly animated barbie dolls. They play Eve because of its complexity, its depth, its empire building, the ability to destroy others hard work, and the chance to beat down would be destroyers of their own work. They play for the fights in space, for the massive epic battles, or the small fight where individual pilot skill with game mechanics matters.

There is little hope right now for Eve players looking forward to the future. CCP has abandoned the reason people play Eve. The term FiS is the most disgusting thing I have ever heard in my entire time in Eve, and I have fought Goons for years and had to endure their local chat spam. If there was even hope, many people would once again calm down and be satisified with what they have, but CCP has lied and failed us for so long now people have no faith in them. Many have lost any hope they once help for CCP to pull through and live up to their promises, and actually fix all the things, both big and little, that are wrong with the game, especially in any sort of reasonable timeframe.

How's that working for you?

The incremental fixes?

The patches are buggier and still aren't fixed 6 months later despite incremental patches.

The patches are buggier these days? How easily you forget! None of the problems in the last few releases have stopped me playing the game (with the minor issue of SM3.0 support not being available for my video card which almost stopped me playing entirely, but that's a problem with nVidia/Apple, and has been worked around by Transgaming).

There is nothing about the game at present which is fundamentally more broken than it has been since Dominion. Once we are in space, the actual flying in space component of the game is pretty much the same. New turrets? Big deal. New ship models? They're pretty, but so what?

I was expecting more progress on Incarna, since the achievement of multiplayer Incarna would indicate that development focus would be shifting back to flying-in-space.

The recent patches might have appeared buggier since they have had to release three client updates, but that's part and parcel of the gradual "Carbon-isation" of the EVE codebase. This stuff needs to be iterated quickly, exposing smaller number of bugs in many more releases, rather than having MOTHER OF GOD THE BUGS level of bugs in one release every six months.

And I'll restate my suggestion to anyone from CCP that gives a damn: please ensure bugs raised on Singularity/Duality are fixed before releasing to Tranquility. Not doing so really cheapens the efforts of your paying-to-test beta testers.

That quote?

Now compare my quote to yours!

I can do it, why can't you? I suppose I could have butchered the original post, but leaving a section bolded should have been enough emphasis.

So... let's retrace okay?

Some random internet poster said "I wish a current CCP Dev cared enough about the game to cheat".

I quoted it, bolded the part I cared about, and said "Quoted for the mother ******* win". Leaving the part I didn't really care about intact so it stayed relevant, since the quote was from multiple pages back.

I don't see any QQ in there... sorry mate. Ya might be hunting for something that doesn't actually exist.

You took the quote, stripped everything out, and suggested I said "Icelandic law prohibited something". Now... I don't know jack about Icelandic law, so that'd be silly of me to suggest. Although I do know enough about willful vs. non-willful misconduct to think it'd be tricky to fire someone over cheating in a video game... so CCP would probably just avoid firing the guy.

//EDIT: But to stay on topic... Yes... I do wish a current CCP Dev actually was passionate enough about the game today to risk his job because he... cared about the game. On that same topic... because of how ham-fisted CCP's Internal Affairs is about their dev's because of the T20 thing, damn few dev's do anything serious in-game. Most of them seem to just run the rare L4 mission in high-sec, or mine. BoB walking out with a ten extra T2 BPO's really can't compare to multiple years of CCP Developer's not wanting to get too deeply involved in the game because they'd have internal affairs watching everything they do.

//EDIT2: Wowsers... what an epic derailment THAT turned out to be, over pretty much nothing.

I think what he is saying is that Eve has a long standing and pretty firm reputation in the industry of being an awsome, must try game. Its really only recently that reputation is tarnished and given that in every MMO has their "this company sucks, this game is dying" crowd, finding such things on a forum will not diswayed anyone. I speak from experiance, I just helped 4 of my friends sign up and they have no clue about the outrage on the forums and they are loving the game, so much some of them are already getting second accounts and they have all bought extra PLEXES and sold them for ISK to get a jump start in the game.

So while the negative media attention will have an impact if it continues, this short spirt of negative media coverage really isn't going to have much of an impact on the game... again unless it continues and suistains, but in order for that to happen their has to be something new to report. Mittans going on the forums and doing interviews repeating the same information that already exists is going to have a very short shelf life and this will all be old and irrelevant news very soon. CCP staying quiet is actually a very smart move in that regard, no new information to talk about means no new news to report or new discussions to put up for debate. Silence always results in less media coverage and is a common and advisable PR tactic.

I mean what is Mittans going to say a week from now? Repeat the same line to the same news sites that have already covered the same story? CSM is mad, they want new stuff to do, not to stuff to wear...? He's already used that line three times in three seperate story's about the same thing... Its used up and their is no onion to peel here. It will be old news and it will fall off the radar unless he has something new and juicy to present and CCP is not giving him any fuel.

It's terrible, I agree.

Time will tell just how effective we have been.

I personally believe this CSM has managed to open doors of communication with CCP that no other CSM has so far. Even amidst all of the DRAMA, there are still cordial exchanges taking place between the CSM and CCP. If nothing else, that alone will make things much easier for future CSM's.

I've said my bit about the whole mess here in my recent blog post: Reality Check. We're not really aiming to start riots and all that, but I think most players agree that something is wrong with EVE and a concerted effort by the CSM in pointing that out should be expected.

Mittani speaks out yet agaizzzzzzzz

To be honest it's only a small vocal minority that actually give a shite, Mittani gets wheeled out like some sort of SC-FI head in a jar to pretty much expunge everything that the same people have been saying for months and months and now it's news?

CCP will run the game as they see fit no matter what us forum warriors and mostly 0.0 waffle on about.

Just play the game as you see fit and if it gets to a point you don't like it anymore play something else. It's a great game but it's just a game,if it dies oh well so what, I might actually leave the house and experience something else like life, nothing has really changed since I started playing a few years back, I still do the same stuff no matter and probably will no matter what changes they bring in.

CSM is voted on by such a small minority of players (yes I voted) the whole system should be scrapped although I must admit I have a step-sister in Iceland I would like to visit, In fact I might go for CSM on the platform of trying to remove the CSM.
