First is this is the wrong place, feel free to tell me so.

This is the story as I know it. My friend logged in and sat in station for about 10 minutes. He accepted a mission and headed out in his CNR to do said mission. Was a two pocket Blood Raider mission iirc. Either way, he's soon telling me to get on and come to him because he's being shot at. Guy had a worm, then as I got there also had an alt/friend with an Orca so he swapped ships and popped him shortly after I got there.

So, I asked my friend if he did ANYTHING towards the other guy, loot a yellow wreck, pretty much did you do anything between logging on til this point that wasn't just doing the mission. He said no, he didn't loot anything, not even his own wrecks. He said the guy came in, locked him and just started shooting. We aren't at war, and if he had shot the guy initially he would have been Concorded so it likely wasn't stray drones either, and those were on passive.

He's a really good friend that I trust, and I still have some small doubts that he didn't do anything to bring it upon himself, BUT just in case someone else has seen something like this, I'd figured I'd ask.

Basically as far as I can tell, he never aggressed the other guy, who was able to somehow come in and just shoot him freely.

Thoughts?

Your friend lied.

Simple as that.

Your friend is lying because he does't want to admit that his own stupidity led to the loss of his pinata.

My guess is that the guy looted, your friend freaked out when he went red and shot at him. Embarassing sure, but not the worst thing that could happen in eve. But in the odd chance that your friend can' get over this fact, and decides to rage quit...

his stuff, can I has?

And a sudden plunge in the sullen swell. Ten fathoms deep on the road to hell.

My friend is one to admit when he made an idiot mistake, as am I. In fact he's lost other ships from making noob mistakes, and fully accepted it was his fault. This case, there's no apparent aggression at all. He looted nothing and never shot the guy til he was shooting him.

He's also been in the situation before and knows not to shoot the thief since it's just bait.

And no, you can't. He's not so childish to ragequit over internet spaceships. We just want to know what caused the aggression.

And I doubted him initially for a while, I do that with anyone, even my best friends.

Did your mate accept the mission which sent him to lowsec space if so...

You mad bro?

If it was in lowsec the Pirate had every right to kill you.

Is it possible that the other guy was just flagged for looting and not actually firing his weapons?

Firstly, this is the loss.

It's a 2 billion ISK fit, so it was either going to be lost to a ninja, or suicide ganked if it was flown in Obanen (I assume he was picking up missions from the popular mission hub that is Poinen? Bad idea)

Secondly, there's no two ways about it, your friend cocked up. He shot the guy. I assume what actually happened was he had "autolockback" on, and simply shot the wrong target on the top. It was lost to a guy from [TEARS] who know their mission runner ganking very, very well. It doesn't mean, however, they can ignore aggression mechanics.

Get your friend to find the gamelog from that day (My docs > eve > game logs) and post it here, we'll be able to show you where it went wrong. i.e. the bit where it will show him shooting first.

This really would have gone over better in the Newbie Q&A forum.

The information received in Crime & Punishment will be the same, but the delivery will be...different.

I was actually listening to this kill, your friend opened fire on the worm before returning to shooting rats, then firing on the worm again; either due to a mistake with targeting or because he's daft.

In summary, he either lied to you or is amazingly bad at paying attention to anything he is doing. That should answer your questions with something other than 'lololololol' P

I'll bet you a cold Quake and Jack on ice that if your friend checks his log, he'll find that he fired on Blade's worm. He then got popped after my colleague swapped to his Legion. Mission Bears quite frequently screw up and shoot ninjas (pro tip: auto targeting is not your friend) so there's really no sense in looking for an exploit here. As Khanh'rhh stated, we know the aggro mechanics about as well as anyone, but we can't simply start shooting at you (unless it's a suicide gank of course) unless you "go red".

tell him to turn autotargeting off, and to watch who he's shooting.

Tedium and difficulty are not the same thing, if you don't realize this then STFU about game design.

That is a very nice KM.

Your friend shot first, that is why the innocent salvager defended himself.
whether he realizes this or not is moot. he shot first.
Also. damn shame that Shield Booster didn't drop.

The guys that killed him are 100% pro. I hate to admit it, but they are among the top 2% of Empire Combatants, they know the rules, and are expert in getting aggression. I think they got to your friend and tampered with his anus before violenceing his boat.

Props to TEARS

I don't see the guy as a liar, that would be rude.

However, mistakes are made, miscalculations and accidents occur, your friend may have been caught in a trap that is avoidable with knowledge and wisdom. Maybe there was a fault in the game mechanics.

CCP will be able to look at the logs and help.

I think there has been an oversight personally, the aggressor defended their actions, obviously they felt the need to defend themselves. It does get tedious stalking a character for hours upon end.

My mind keeps saying "kill rights", but it says many interesting and unrelated things, late at night, when I'm all alone, the doctors call it paracusis, however that word is spelt, but I digress.

I think you need to examine all the facts, not just opinions.

Well your friend commited the Crime and was Punished. He must realise about auto locking surely? Just go to the Esc menu and uncheck the box. When I have been a mission Ninja a few times people said they didnt even notice me when they fired, indicating that people have auto lock on and dont always check their targets.

I fail to see how he didn't notice a flashy red in his overview?

Still, mistakes are made and as always he can afford to replace what he lost right? Remebering that you dont fly what you can't afford to get blown up.
