Or mainly just for lols or the initial name was already taken by someone else.

NCdot for instance is a lol name related to the old Nothern Coalition (several alliances) that controlled the upper regions of 0.0-sec.

Most often: Corp and Alliance names come from the same namespace. So when a corp establishes an alliance with their own name they usually put a '.' behind it.

Other times an alliance fails and cascades, then some people desperatly try to breath life back into it, unfortunatly they don't have access to the original name\holding corp so they need to create a "new" alliance so decide to name it something like Atlas. it then flounders for a few months before realising that Bobby was what held it together and dies... again.
